What You Need To Know
Step 1: Get Medical Attention
- Your health comes first! Seek appropriate medical attention from the University’s approved medical providers listed below.
- Life-threatening emergency: Call University Police at 22222 or go to the nearest medical facility.
- All others: Wilmington Health Occupational Medicine, 1202 Medical Center Drive, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday–Friday 910.815.4228
DO NOT PROVIDE YOUR MEDICAL INSURANCE CARD
Wilmington Health Occupation Medicine is staffed by physicians trained in emergency and family medicine and is the appropriate place of treatment for most non-life-threatening situations, including lacerations requiring sutures, strains, sprains, possible fractures, and insect stings. - Serious Injury: New Hanover Orthopedic Hospital - ER 910.667.8100, 5301 Wrightsville Ave.
Step 2: Report the Incident ASAP
- Alert your supervisor immediately after the injury (or as soon as you are safe).
- Call the Workers’ Compensation Administrator at 910.962.3006 or EHS at 910.962.3057.
Step 3: File the Claim
- Complete an Employee’s Statement. This is a DocuSign form and will automatically be sent to HR and EHS.
- Medical notes will be electronically sent to HR, so you do not need to provide them.
Step 4: Stay in Touch
- You will be contacted by our third-party adjuster within a few days to take a statement.
Step 5: Follow Up & Recovery
- Take care of yourself while in recovery.
- Report all injuries and illnesses immediately to your supervisor.
- Obtain medical treatment from the University-approved medical providers. Contact HR (x23006) and we will call ahead. No appointment necessary.
- In any event, the employee should give their supervisor or Workers’ Compensation Administrator (WCA) written notice of their injury no later than 30 days after it happens, or the employer may refuse compensation.
- Complete the employee statement located on the HR website and EHS website. These are Docusign forms, which will be routed and returned to HR and EHS.
- Complete the Use of Leave Options form.
- Cooperate with the investigation by the third-party administrator, CorVel.
- You should not present your State Health Plan (Aetna) or personal health plan card. Explain that this visit is due to a work-related injury. If you do receive an invoice, forward the invoice to Kelly Kennedy at kennedyk@uncw.edu
- Ensure that the injured employee receives immediate and appropriate medical attention and is directed to approved medical providers.
- Report the injury immediately to Human Resources (962-3006) and/or Environmental Health & Safety (962-3057).
- Complete Supervisor’s Accident Report using this DocuSign form that will route appropriately.
- Correct unsafe conditions immediately, and assist in the accident investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
- Review the Return-to-Work form given to the employee by the physician. Employees are expected to return to work on the day of the injury unless the approved treating physician provides a written authorization prohibiting return to work.
- Follow the physician’s instructions for work restrictions; assign alternate work duties if appropriate. Contact Human Resources with questions about the Transitional Work Program.
- Communicate with injured employees to ensure their needs are met.
- Explore opportunities to provide modified duty work.
