There are many opportunities for research outside of UNCW. We will post them here as we see them (but we won’t catch them all). Different kinds of programs require different kinds and levels of experience (some don’t require any previous research experience!). Read more about each opportunity in the linked sites.
You will find summer programs first, then internships, then post-baccalaureate programs at the end. Most of the deadlines for Summer 2024 have passed but these programs occur yearly so you can start preparing for Summer 2025.

National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REUs) - Science and Social Science (you can also search here by filtering for REU through the search option)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds hundreds of programs across the US to provide mentored research experiences to undergraduate students each summer. Students receive a stipend (usually $6000-7000), housing, and support for travel and food. Each site has its own application and application deadline. Topics include conventional sciences as well as computer science, ethics and values, education, small business innovation, and social sciences. Websites for specific Summer 2024 programs will be listed below as we encounter them (listed by application due date).
*Note: Each REU program hosts about 10 students, making these programs quite competitive but not impossible. Start your applications early and take them seriously. CSURF if happy to provide guidance but we are not able to pull strings to get students accepted. Summer Tropical Ecological Research in Benin - NSF International Research Experience for Students (NSF-IRES) - Biology
From the website: "This IRES project will study the demographic consequences of plant-ant interactions in Mahogany forests in Benin, West Africa using a long-term study system first established in 2003. Students will get the opportunity to learn practical methods to collect and analyze field biological data to test ecological hypotheses, participate in peer-led peer learning activities, design their own research project with guidance from mentors." Program dates are May 19-July 8 2024. Students will receive round trip airfare to and from Benin, lodging, food, transportation, and a $3000 stipend. Applications due April 15 2024.

BeeMORE at North Carolina State University - Biology
Summer program (May 26-Aug 2 2024) at NCSU focused on microbiology and bee biology, including pollination, crop productivity, earth ecology, and health and disease. The program includes both a "Bees and Microbes Bootcamp" and independent research project. Students receive a stipend ($500/week), housing, and food allowance. Applications are due Jan 31 2024.
McClelan-Green Summer Fellows and Simpson Scholars Programs - Marine/Coastal Science
10-week summer research program (May 28-Aug 2 2024) at NC State University's Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (Morehead City NC). Students will work with faculty mentors to design and execute research projects. The McClelan-Green Summer Fellows Program is open to all NC undergrad students (university, college, or community college level), while the Simpson Scholars Program is open to all undergraduate students who identify as belonging to groups typically underrepresented in marine science. The application is the same. Students will be paid $15/hr and housing is available at CMAST Coastal Quarters. Applications are due by Feb 28 2024.
Center for Whale Research Summer Internship - Biology
3-month summer internship (June 15-Sept 15 2024) based on San Juan Island, Washington. Interns "conduct on-the-water field work, catalog and analyze data, and communicate scientific information to the public." The Center conducts non-invasive demographic and behavioral research on the resident killer whales in the Pacific Northwest. Housing and training is provided as is a $1000/month stipend. Applications are due February 15 2024 at 11:59 PST.
Summer Neuroscience Internship Program (SNIP) - Neuroscience
10-week, full-time research internship at the University of Florida. SNIP participants receive "personalized mentoring, guidance on graduate school admissions, professional development and career planning." SNIP students receive a $5000 stipend and housing. Applicants can be rising juniors or seniors or recently graduated but cannot have already been accepted into a postgraduate program. Applications are due Feb 1 2024.
Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) Summer Undergraduate Research Program - Biological and Crop Sciences
10-week summer program (May 20-July 26 2024) with mentored research in multiple disciplines, including biochemistry, plant biology, genetics, microbiology, ecology, engineering, sustainability, and crop sciences. The GLBRC is at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. Students will also participate in research seminars, field trips, and professional development seminars. The program provides a $6000 stipend and $500 for travel. Applications are due January 14 2024.
The Center for Ohio River Research & Education Undergraduate Research Internships - Aquatic Biology and Environmental Science
Summer internships running June 1 to August 4 2024. There are projects in animal husbandry and river and stream assessments. Interns receive a $3500 stipend and free on-site housing. Applications are due Feb 9 2024.
RNA Bioscience Initiative (RBI) Summer Internship Program - Biology, Chemistry, Bioinformatics
10-week mentored research program at The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. This program is for students with a strong interest in RNA and a desire to go to graduate school and comes with a 2-day methods bootcamp and weekly small group seminars from the faculty. Students receive round trip travel to Denver, housing, and a $4500 stipend. Applications are due Feb 15 2024.

Biomedical Research for University Students in Health Sciences (BRUSH) Summer Research Program - Biomedical Sciences
Summer program (May 20-August 2 2024) for undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in biomedical research. Students spend the summer conducting research under the mentorship of Michigan State University researchers. Students also receive a $5700 stipend, room, and board. Applications are due February 12 2024.
Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Experience - Engineering
10-week full-time research experience (May 20-July 26 2024) with Engineering faculty at Michigan State University. Students are paid $16/hr, earning a maximum of $6400 for the summer. Students are responsible for their own transportation, housing, meals, etc though housing options on campus are available. Applications are due Jan 31 2024 for full consideration. Applications will be accepted until the program fill though.
National Institute of Standards and Technology Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (NIST SURF) - Science
11-week summer research internship (June 3-Aug 16) at an NIST facility in either Boulder CO or Gaithersburg MD. Opportunities in most STEM fields. Students receive a $6600 stipend, as well as assistance with lodging and travel. Applications for Summer 2024 are open and due Jan 31 2024.
US Department of Energy (DOE) Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internships - Science
Paid internships at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. Internships can be 10 weeks during the summer (May-August) or a 16 weeks during the semester (August-December or January-May). Interns are paid $650/week and can be reimbursed for one round trip travel to the laboratory if more than 50 miles from home. Applications are due October 4 2023 for Spring internships, January 9 2024 for summer internships, and late May for Fall internships (exact dates TBD).
NASA Student Airborne Research Program (NASA SARP) - Earth Science
8-week summer program with mentors from NASA. From the website: "The NASA Airborne Science Program maintains a fleet of aircraft used for studying Earth system processes, calibration/validation of space-borne observations, and prototyping instruments for possible satellite missions. SARP participants assist in the operation of instruments onboard one of these aircraft to sample atmospheric gases and/or to image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands." Preference is given to rising seniors. Participants receive a stipend, housing, transportation, and travel. Applications are due Jan 31 2024, 5pm.
National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program (SIP) - Science and Medicine
Full-time research positions within one of the NIH Institutes or Centers. From the website: "We offer research opportunities in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences with opportunities to explore basic, translational, and clinical research. Students interested in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing, physics, computer science, bioinformatics, and other health-related fields are invited to apply." Interns are paid but housing is not provided. Applications close Feb 16 at noon ET.

Duke's STAR (Summer Training in Academic Research) Program - Science and Medicine
Eight-week program (June 24-August 2 2024) for high school and college students to gain hands-on research experience in science and medicine. The program is located in Durham NC at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. College students receive $3200 stipend. No prior research experience is necessary. US citizenship or permanent residency and strong interest in science are required. Applications are accepted from November 20 2023 to Jan 5 2024 (11:59pm EST).
SURPH (Summer Undergraduate Research in Pharmacology and Cancer Biology) at Duke - Biomedical Science
10-week program (late May to end of July 2024, exact dates TBD), research experience in Duke's Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology. Students receive stipends, room, and board. Must be rising junior or senior and interested in pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD. Applications are accepted Nov 8 2023 to Feb 14 2024, 5pm.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program - Immunology and Microbiology
10-week summer program (May 18-July 26 2024) at the Pitt School of Medicine. Students receive hands-on experience in biomedical research and guidance for their future research-related career. The stipend is $3500 and the program provides $500 for housing costs. Travel support is available. Applications due March 1 2024.
Stowers Summer Scholars Program - Science and Medicine
Eight-week program (June 3-July 26 2024) for undergrads to conduct full-time research under guidance and mentorship at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, MO. Scholars receive a $5000 salary, round-trip transportation to and from Kansas City, and housing. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis from November to Feb 2.

Nine-week summer program for rising sophomores to rising seniors to gain hands-on research experience under the mentorship of a research pharmacologist at UNC-Chapel Hill. In addition to research, fellows participate in a weekly seminar series, get ethics training, learn how to apply for graduate school, and more. Fellows receive a $4000 stipend, free campus housing, and $500 for food. Must be US citizen or have valid visa. Applications are due Feb 5 2024.
Einstein Summer Undergraduate Research Program - Science and Medicine
Eight-week lab-based research program (May 30-July 30 2024) for students completing their junior year. Students are matched with laboratories at Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx NY. The program includes research, weekly seminars, ethics and career planning workshops, and a trip to the zoo. Students receive $3000 stipend, housing on campus, and $500 in transportation assistance. UAB Heersink SOM Clinical and Research Undergraduate Summer Programs - Science and Medicine
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine hosts 11 clinical and research programs for undergraduate students each summer. All programs provide discipline-specific training in cystic fibrosis, neuroscience, genomic medicine, cancer, and more. More information for each program can be found on the website. All use a common application, where you can also find the eligibility criteria for each program. Applications are due Feb 28 2024.
MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) - Many disciplines
Summer program where students interested in pursuing graduate education at MIT conduct research with MIT faculty, postdoc fellows, and graduate students. Students who complete this program are better prepared for advanced degrees, particularly at MIT. Program perks include a weekly stipend, round trip travel support, and room and board. Applications are due Jan 16 2024.
Bernard S. and Sophie G. Gould MIT Summer Research Program in Biology (BSG-MSRP-Bio) - Biology
10-week summer program (May 27-August 3 2024) of full-time research training at MIT. The program also includes weekly seminars, extracurricular activities, and community building. Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) - Humanities, Social Science, Arts, Education, Science, Medicine
10-week summer program (May 22-August 1 2024) for 200(!) undergraduate students to get full-time research experience with a University of Utah faculty member. Students additionally get professional development training through the Educational Series and Grad School Mini Expo. Students are paid $5000, regular temporary employee perks (access to libraries, free public transit, etc), can receive up to $500 for relocation costs, and have the option to stay in on-campus housing (for $250). Applications are due January 28 2024, 11:59pm MST.
National Summer Undergraduate Research Project (NSURP) - Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer; fully remote
From the website: “NSURP is a community-driven initiative to create rewarding remote summer research experiences for BIPOC and Latinx undergraduate students in the fields of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer.” Students work full time (40 hrs/week) remotely but closely with STEM mentors from across the US (and sometimes the world). There are online professional development lectures and speakers. Students receive $600 per week for the 8-week program. Recent publication about the program here. Summer School in Logic and Formal Epistemology - Philosophy, Math
Three-week summer program (June 3-21 2024) at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh PA) for undergraduates in philosophy, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, economics, and other sciences. From the website: "During this three-week, intensive program, we introduce a small group of approximately 25 promising students to cross-disciplinary fields of research at an early stage in their career, forging lasting links between these disciplines along with friendships and professional contacts." The program is free - there is no tuition and on-campus housing is provided. Applications are due February 14 2024.
Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy (HCSPiP) - Philosophy
Two-week program (June 23-July 9 2024) to explore new approaches to philosophy. Students receive a stipend, room and board, and support for travel. Applications will open December 16 2023 and be due March 11 2024.
Colorado Summer Seminar in Philosophy - Philosophy
From their website: “The aim is to introduce students to the atmosphere of a graduate-level seminar, giving them a chance to explore their philosophical abilities and interests before they commit to a graduate program.” 2024 program will run June 9 through June 28 in Boulder CO with the topic of "Natural Questions". Review of applications begins March 1 2024. This program does cost ~$2000.
Research Opportunities compiled by the American Psychological Association - Psychology
All internships look different. Some seem identical to conventional research opportunities and some might be more experience-based or on-the-job training. I'm still going to post internships here because they are good applied learning experiences that share many of the characteristics and benefits of undergraduate research experiences. There are, of course, more internships on Handshake and through the Career Center.
North Carolina Coastal Reserve & National Estuarine Research Reserve
4 paid summer internships are available for undergraduate students. The Friends of the Reserve Undergraduate Internship application is due Jan 19. The 3 State of NC Internship applications are due January 8.
National Park Service Scientists in Parks Program
From the website: "The SIP Program provides participants with a high-quality work experience that inspires and develops the next generation of natural resource management park stewards, and fosters a life-long connection to the National Park System. SIP positions vary considerably in complexity, length, discipline, and skill set, in accordance with the particular needs of NPS units and abilities of the participants." Interns are paid, receive a relocation allowance, uniform stipend, and either on-site housing or a housing stipend. Internship lengths range from 12 weeks to a full year. Each applicant can apply for up for 5 positions. Postings for available positions close Jan 21 2024 or when 100 applications for that position have been received, whichever comes first.
Bald Head Island Conservancy Internship Program
From the website: "The Bald Head Island Conservancy internship program provides an opportunity for individuals to gain valuable experience and make a meaningful contribution to the organization’s mission. Interns work alongside Conservancy staff and assist with various projects related to conservation and environmental education." There are internship topics vary and include marketing, education, retail, development (fundraising), environmental sciences, and sea turtles. Interns receive a stipend of $600 per month, housing, parking, and weekly ferry tickets between the island and mainland. NOAA Ocean Exploration Explorer-in-Training Program
From the website: "As part of its mission to train the next generation of ocean explorers, scientists, engineers, and communicators, NOAA Ocean Exploration hosts students in the Explorer-in-Training Program. These interns gain valuable, interdisciplinary experience in ocean exploration while collaborating on office projects and expeditions. Explorer-in-Training internships enable students to increase their competitiveness for educational and career opportunities in ocean-related fields." There are 2-4 week expedition-based programs as well as 10-week summer programs. ALl are paid, some have travel reimbursement as well. Must be current undergrad or grad student or have graduated in the previous year. Applications due Jan 31.
Sea Turtle Rehabilitation, Conservation, and Education Internship
From the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center website: "Our signature Internship offers college students and recent graduates an in-depth, hands-on opportunity to learn about sea turtle husbandry and conservation. Additionally, interns practice science communication by delivering environmental education programs and public tours. Interns also learn about nonprofit organizations through an in-depth project involving education, marketing, communications, facilities, or another area of interest. Interns working in the summer session also practice leadership by mentoring high school Junior Interns and Sea Turtle Camp volunteers." Applications are due Feb 1 2024. There are 10 positions available.

Oceantic Network Summer Internship Program
From the website: "Oceantic Network interns gain valuable experience for their future careers and contribute to the advancement of renewable energy. Interns engage in practical and meaningful work in a collaborative environment, working alongside peers from national institutions and the team of experts at Oceantic Network. Interns work closely with mentors to develop an internship plan, identify learning opportunities, and receive feedback on performance." Internships have flexible start and end dates but must be at least 10 weeks during the summer. Positions are available in Communications, Digital Tools, Education & Training, Event & Program, Graphic Design, Marketing, Policy, and Supply Chain & Research. Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) Summer Internship Program
10-week summer internship (June 10-Aug 16 2024) where students are immersed in collaborative research projects. Interns are paid $20/hr but housing, food, and travel are not provided. Applications are due Feb 27 2024, 8am PST.
Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences Program
10 weeks of full-time research in a ISB lab in Seattle WA. The dates are flexible but must include June 17-Aug 2. Interns work 30-40 hrs per week and receive at least $625/week. Housing is not provided but students can apply for a $4200 housing stipend and choose from available housing at the University of Washington. Applications are due Feb 26 2024.
Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program
10-week summer internship for students to participate in research, mentored by a Navy laboratory. First-time interns receive a $7500 stipend; returning interns receive $9000 stipends. Applications open Aug 1 and close November 1.
North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve Internship
This is a for-course-credit internship for up to 120 hours (4 credit hrs) between May and July 2024 (start and end dates are flexible). Interns will work on Masonboro Island, Zeke's Island, Bald Head Woods, and Bird Island assisting doing trail maintenance and sign installation, species monitoring, outreach, and more. Applications are due Feb 23 2024
These "post-bac" programs are for students who have already completed their undergraduate degree (usually within 1-4 years of graudation) and are looking for more experience before applying to graduate or professional school. STEGG-INTERACT Research and Mentoring for Post-Baccalaureates (RaMP) Program (University of Houston) - Evolutionary Biology
One-year, full-time program for students to gain experience and skills in evolutionary biology and genetics, bioinformatics, and science communication. Research is based at University of Houston, Rice University, or Texas A&M University. Participants receive a $32,500 stipend, plus a stipend for health insurance and parking/transportation. The program runs from June 1 to May 30. Applicants should have little to no previous research experience but should be interested in evolutionary biology. Applications are due February 15 2024 for full consideration.
UConn Research Training Program (University of Connecticut) - STEM
Yearlong program (August 1 2024-July 31 2025) for recent graduates (particularly first generation students and students from underrepresented groups in STEM) to gain research and professional skills for successful STEM careers. Applicants must be within 4 years of graduation. No prior research experience is necessary. Students receive individualized research experiences but in a collaborative setting. They will also attend conferences and have networking opportunities. Scholars receive a yearly stipend of $32,500 plus health insurance. Applications are due March 1 2024.
BioGEM Postbaccalaureate Research Program (University of Kansas) - Biodiversity
This program provides research opportunities in biodiversity and genetic evolutionary mechanisms for recent college grads with little or no research experience. Scholars conduct research and participate in professional development series to become competitive for graduate schools and/or industry jobs. The program provides a $32,500/yr salary, funds for travel to conferences, and workshops and networking for graduate and job applications. For priority consideration, applications must be completed by March 1 2024. The application portal will formally close on May 1 2024.
Louisiana Graduate Network in Applied Evolution (LAGNiAppE) (Louisiana State University) - Evolutionary biology
One-year program that includes a research methods bootcamp, individualized research projects, workshops, conferences, and professional development training. The program includes a $34,050 stipend and health insurance. Applications are due March 3 2024.
Bridge to the PhD Program in STEM (Columbia University) - STEM
Two-year program for students from underrepresented groups that want to pursue doctoral programs in STEM. Participants are hired as research assistants which comes with a $43,100 salary, health insurance, and a $1500 stipend for professional and education expenses. Applications are open Dec 15 2023 to March 1 2024.
MBL Postbaccalaureate Program (Marine Biological Laboratory) - Biological Sciences
One-year program of mentored research with extra training in scientific communication, grant writing, and data analysis. Students receive a stipend and healthcare benefits. Applications open January 16 2024 and are due April 1 2024.
Jax Postbac Training Program (The Jackson Laboratory) - Genomics and Data Science
Two-year training program for recent graduates from historically marginalized communities wanting to do graduate school or have a career in genomics, genome technologies, and data science. Trainees get individualized research projects as well as guidance with graduate school applications and admissions. The annual stipend is $41,000 plus health benefits. Applications are due Feb 15 2024.
National Institutes of Health Postbac Program (NIH) - Biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences
Full-time research positions for recent grads to gain experience in one of the NIH Institutes and Centers. Postbacs also participate in professional development programs and career advising. Additionally, postbacs qualify for living stipends, health insurance, and parking. Applications are accepted year-round and they recommend you apply six months prior to your preferred start date.
UNC PREP (UNC-Chapel Hill) - Biomedical Sciences
One-year program for students pursuing a career in Biomedical Sciences. PREP scholars receive a living stipend of $30,000, full tuition, health insurance, and funds to travel to a scientific conference. During the program, students do research, take graduate-level coursework, and participate in professional development activities. Applications are open November 13 2023 to February 13 2024.
Damon Runyon-Scholars Program for Advancing Research and Knowledge (Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation) - Cancer Research

During their one-year SPARK internship, SPARK Scholars will develop and hone their research skills by working in a cancer research lab with a mentor who is a Damon Runyon scientist." Scholars receive rigorous scientific training, mentorship, and assistance with graduate school applications. Stipends are up to $50,000. Additionally scholars are eligible for up to $8500 for living costs and $2500 for travel to conferences.
