The Office of Internal Audit at UNCW was established in 1983.
Within the Office of Internal Audit, our objective is to enhance and protect the University. This is accomplished by providing independent auditing, advisory, and investigative services to assist management in balancing operational efficiency with risk identification, assessment, and control.
We help UNCW accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes. We report to the Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees and collaborate with management to enhance assurance and accountability at all levels of the University community.
Vision
Protecting. Assisting. Enhancing.
Mission
To enhance and protect the university's value by providing stakeholders with risk-based, objective and reliable, assurance, advice, and insight.
Values
Integrity. Objectivity. Confidentiality. Competence.
Our work is conducted and managed in accordance with The Institute of Internal Auditors' (IIA's) International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditors, which include the core principles for the professional practice of internal auditing, the definition of internal auditing, Code of Ethics, and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards).
In order to fully comply with the Standards, our office must have a quality assurance and improvement program that includes both internal and external assessments. The most recent external assessment of our office occurred in June 2021, and we received the highest possible rating overall and in each separately assessed category.
The Office of Internal Audit reports functionally to the Audit, Risk, and Compliance (ARC) Committee of UNCW's Board of Trustees and administratively to the Chancellor. In keeping with the IIA's Standards, we maintain a strong working relationship with the ARC Committee. Consequently, the Chief Audit Officer (CAO) presents results of audits and other office activities to the ARC Committee at their quarterly meetings. In addition, the CAO assists the ARC Committee in understanding their role and responsibilities and educates committee members on emerging trends and best practices.
