General Questions
What are the minimum admission requirements?
For admission to a graduate degree program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the applicant must:
- Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in this country or its equivalent in a foreign institution. The Graduate School will determine equivalency of international baccalaureate degrees.
- Have a strong overall academic record with a B average or better in the basic courses prerequisite to the area of proposed graduate study
- Meet additional admission requirement(s) as outlined the graduate program.
The to Graduate School at UNCW is an online process. Please review the application steps to assist you in applying.
How much is the application fee?
The application fee is $75. This fee is non-transferable and non-refundable.
How do I pay the application fee?
The application fee is paid via the online application. Once an application is complete, the applicant will move to submission. Once the application is submitted, you will be prompted to pay the application fee by either Master Card or Visa. You will have the opportunity to print the payment voucher.
What are your application deadlines?
The application deadlines are established by individual programs. All documents/form must be received by the established deadline. See the Application Deadlines and Requirements web page
What documents/forms do I need to submit?
Each program will establish the required documents and forms.
Why am I being asked for my Social Security number?
If you intend to work on campus or receive financial aid, your social security number is required. It is also an excellent identifier for Graduate School to match test scores or transcripts with your record. Many applicants do not use their full legal name, which causes delays in application processing due to information having to be confirmed by e-mail or regular mail.
Should I enter my middle name on my application?
Yes. An applicant should use their full legal name on the application. This ensures that all supplemental material will be matched to the proper record.
Required Documents
What is the deadline for documents/forms required for the application?
All documents and forms required by the program must be received no later than the published deadline for the program.
Do I need to mail a hard copy of any document that was uploaded into the online application?
No. The documents that are uploaded into the system are acceptable. Preview the uploaded documents prior to submission to ensure accuracy.
Can previously submitted documents/forms be merged with my most recent application?
If you previously attended UNCW or submitted an application to Graduate School within the last year, you may have document i.e. transcript, recommendations that you wish to recycle. Upload a Word document into the ‘Special Requests to Graduate School’ section of the application. Outline specifically which documents you wish to have added to your most recent application.
May I submit my application prior to taking the GRE, GMAT or MAT [if required]?
Absolutely! If the program to which you are applying requires the GRE, GMAT or MAT, the official score report should to sent to UNCW Graduate School prior to the published deadline of the program. You may submit your application with the date you intend to complete the exam and submit. This will allow Graduate School the opportunity to begin processing your application.
How do I ask that previously submitted supplemental documents be merged with my most recent application?
If you previously attended UNCW or submitted an application to Graduate School within the last year, you may have document i.e. transcript, recommendations that you wish to recycle. Upload a Word document into the ‘Special Requests to Graduate School’ section of the application. Outline specifically which documents you wish to have added to your most recent application.
Recommendations
How are recommendations submitted?
Recommendations are submitted through the online application. Recommendations should be provided from employers, supervisors, professors, or others who are able to comment on your professional and educational goals and potential (no friends or relatives). If the program in which you are applying requires three recommendations, you will enter them online. Once the recommender information is entered, an e-mail will fire off to the recommender with the link and password and pin for recommendation completion.
Will hard copy or e-mailed copies of recommendations be accepted?
No. Recommendations are only accepted through the online application. Please note that notification e-mails will indicate "University of North Carolina Wilmington" as the sender but will come from support@applyyourself.com. If the recommender’s e-mail uses a spam-blocking tool, please ask them to add this e-mail address to their list of known/safe addresses.
How do I change a recommender that I listed with my online application?

My recommender has not received the e-mail with the login information, what do I do?

My program requires that the recommender upload a traditional letter in addition to the electronic survey.
When the recommender information is listed a text box will display. You may enter any information that needs to be passed to the recommender.
Transcripts
Do I need to request a transcript from each institution I attended?
Yes. One official transcript from each institution is required. This includes community colleges, colleges and universities. However, if you attended UNCW, the UNCW work and any institution listed on your SEANET transcript are not required. Graduate School will be responsible for obtaining these copies.
I am an international student. Do I need to have my transcript evaluated?
Yes. Foreign transcripts must be evaluated and reviewed by an accredited foreign credential evaluation service. Credit evaluations determine the institution accreditation, number of credits earned and how courses transfer into the U.S. educational system. Evaluation reports must be received directly from the approved evaluation service. UNCW accepts 'Course by Course' evaluations from the accredited foreign credential evaluation services of WES.org and ECE.org.
