The Department of English at UNCW provides an exceptional academic experience grounded in critical inquiry, creativity and application.

Welcome to the Department of English

We offer three robust curriculum tracks in literary studies, professional writing and teacher licensure for students pursuing a B.A. in English. At the graduate level, students can design an intellectually sophisticated course of study that aligns with their personal and professional objectives.

We also offer a post-baccalaureate certificate in science and medical writing. Our students pursue careers as entrepreneurs, technical writers, authors, foreign and civil servants, reporters and editors, teachers, professors, website developers, lawyers, and health care professionals.

Anthology of Black Mountain College Poetry

Dr. Alessandro Porco is coeditor of the recently published Anthology of Black Mountain College Poetry (Chapel Hill: UNC Press, 2025), named by NPR's Due South as one of the "most anticipated books" of the spring and described by Ron Silliman as "literally the best presentation of any literary phenomenon we have had in the United States."
