CMS Vessel Operations

The Research Vessel Operations at CMS was formed to operate, maintain and repair the research vessel fleet at the center. At the present time CMS has vessels ranging in size from 13 feet (small boats) to the 35-foot R/V Seahawk all the way up to the 65-foot R/V Cape Fear

R/V Cape Fear

The R/V Cape Fear is a fast, comfortable vessel available for research, training, and educational cruises in waters from near-shore to the continental slope. Based in Wilmington North Carolina, the Cape Fear operates either as a day boat, or for extended operations up to five days at a time. Operations are conducted from the Chesapeake Bay to the Gulf of Mexico.

R/V Seahawk

The R/V Seahawk is a fast day boat located at UNC Wilmington’s Center for Marine Science. The Seahawk is used for educational cruises, dive support and survey work, and can be relocated to other coastal ports throughout the Carolinas.

Small Boats

The CMS small research vessel fleet ranges from small motorboats to larger vessels capable of estuarine and nearshore operations. These vessels are available for use by UNCW certified boat operators. Boat Operator’s certification will normally be restricted to faculty, staff, and graduate students of UNCW. The Small Boats Coordinator oversees maintenance, daily operations, and safety issues as they arise.
