3 Day Startup 2017 at UNCW

3 Day Startup

Sign up by September 29th!

What is it?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. A 72-hour learning-by-doing campus workshop that teaches entrepreneurial skills to people (primarily university students) in an extreme hands-on environment.

The 3DS team is scheduled to come to UNCW from October 13th to 15th. In a three-day, all-day workshop, dozens of students and entrepreneurs will team up and, by the end of the weekend, have viable, actionable plans for startups.

3DS works—it’s responsible for many companies that are household names today. The social media time-travel app, Timehop, was a 3DS project. Other 3DS-launched startups are available to view on their website.

How does it work?

Two weeks before the workshop, attendees will participate in a “boot camp” to meet one another, familiarize themselves with entrepreneurship principles, and receive a briefing on how to maximize 3DS potential. During the actual workshop, participants will go through stages that include brainstorming, initial pitching, team selection, customer discovery, mentorship, more pitching and feedback, and final pitches and demos with investors and mentors. No experience is required for the participants—this is an experience about learning every aspect of entrepreneurship.

Twenty-six students participated in last year's 3DS at the CIE. Here's what it looked like:

More than 11,000 students have participated in 3DS programs in 30 countries, with 150 schools visited and 119 companies successfully launched by program alumni. You do not have to be a student to participate.

This is a truly unique opportunity for UNCW students. You can find more information and register at Make sure to register before September 29th!

  • Do I have to be an entrepreneur already OR be an entrepreneurship major?
    • Absolutely not! This is probably the best part of the workshop. This program is open to all majors and students whom have an idea they wish to expand on OR interested in learning more about what it takes to build a startup. It's that simple! So if you know of anyone else who may be interested in this workshop, go ahead and send them the link to this page.
  • Do I have to have an idea for a startup?
    • Nope! Though you are allowed to have ideas and suggest them to the group you will be separated into, it is not a requirement to come up with one before the workshop starts. Once the groups are formed, each team will have time to brainstorm and select their best startup idea.
  • Will I be required to stay the whole time?
    • That's a negative! The CIE will be open to you for the full 72 hours but you are free to come and go during scheduled downtime and come back refreshed in the morning. If your team decides to stay late or have an all-nighter, then there will be staff and late night snacks to help you throughout the night.
  • What's in it for me?
    • SUPER GLAD you asked! Besides the obvious FREE meals, snacks, and refreshments, if you choose to participate you will have the opportunity to learn and develop invaluable entrepreneurial skills--such as time management, team-building, product/service development, market surveying, and more--that look great on a your resume and are easily translatable to any startup or career field. Did I mention that you get all of this for free?!
