3 Day Startup and You

3 Day Startup is the largest program that the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is putting on this fall—so what is it?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. “A 72-hour learning-by-doing campus workshop that teaches entrepreneurial skills to university students in an extreme hands-on environment.”

The 3DS team is scheduled to come to UNCW from October 14th to 16th. In a three-day, all-day workshop, forty-five students will team up and, by the end of the weekend, have viable, actionable plans for startups.

3DS works—it’s responsible for many companies that are household names today. The social media time-travel app, Timehop, was a 3DS project. Other 3DS-launched startups are available to view on their website.

Two weeks before the workshop, attendees will participate in a “boot camp” to meet one another, familiarize themselves with entrepreneurship principles, and receive a briefing on how to maximize 3DS potential. During the actual workshop, participants will go through stages that include brainstorming, initial pitching, team selection, customer discovery, mentorship, more pitching and feedback, and final pitches and demos with investors and mentors. No experience is required for the participants—this is an experience about learning every aspect of entrepreneurship.

More than 11,000 students have participated in 3DS programs in 30 countries, with 150 schools visited and 90 companies successfully launched by program alumni. The CIE’s 3DS session will be led by facilitator Brendan Costello, an entrepreneur, aspiring marketing strategist, and future farmer who has held a national officer position in Future Farmers of America and an alumni of an entrepreneurship incubator program, himself.

This is a truly unique opportunity for UNCW students. You can find more information and register at or join the CIE for a Google Hangouts information session at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 19th.
