CHHS Faculty, Staff and Students Volunteer at Miracle Field for CHHS Day

On Nov. 4, CHHS faculty, staff and students volunteered at the Miracle Field of Wilmington to help disabled players participate in Miracle League Baseball on Miracle League Game Day.

CHHS community partner, Accessible Coastal Carolina Event Sports and Services (ACCESS of Wilmington) hosted the day-long event. Volunteers buddied with over 160 children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities to assist them around the bases and cheer them on.

Miracle League Baseball is an accessible baseball league that provides access for disabled children and adults who otherwise would not have the opportunity.

Since 2013, hundreds of children and adults living with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism and other physical, intellectual and invisible disabilities have utilized the 33,000 square-foot rubberized BRAX Stadium PPD Miracle Field. In addition to being physically active, ACCESS athletes build confidence, skills and develop lasting relationships.

“The players love to have buddies on game day,” Executive Director of ACCESS of Wilmington, Hayley Sink said. “Many of our players build lasting friendships with their buddies throughout the season. The buddies allow for each player to feel supported and celebrated, and it gives their parents and guardians a chance to cheer them on from the stands. What we do would not be possible without a hundred plus buddies each game day.”

ACCESS of Wilmington is a nonprofit organization that was created in 2008 for the purpose of raising funds to construct The Miracle Field and Playground at Olsen Park.

CHHS students actively participate in fitness programs, veteran’s adapted sports and work with Miracle League as volunteers and researchers.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Miracle League of Wilmington, the spring Miracle League will begin on March 3, 2018. For more information about the Miracle League or to sign up as a volunteer, contact 910.685.1550 or
