Dean's Welcome

CHHS Dean Charles HardyWelcome to the website of the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). CHHS was approved by the UNCW Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors in 2008 and became a reality on July 1, 2010. CHHS was created to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, health knowledge dissemination, and application.

We are currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work. CHHS is dedicated to addressing health and human services needs of individuals, families and communities within our state and beyond. The faculty, staff and students in CHHS are honored to have been afforded the opportunity to build the new college at UNCW and, collectively, we are committed to helping improve health outcomes, elevate the quality of life, enhance social welfare and eliminate health and human services disparities, particularly among underserved communities and vulnerable populations.

During our formative phase, we are focusing on investing the necessary resources to build an outstanding college that will be recognized for high quality teaching, research, and service. The hallmark of the CHHS experience is application of theory to practice. We are committed to the development and application of knowledge regarding health, wellness, human needs, and the quality of human life to prepare the highest quality professional who possess a unique understanding of how to synthesize knowledge and utilize the power of professionals working in interprofessional teams to address real community problems. Our students and faculty will work in close partnerships with the community to discover and apply scientific knowledge that serves the public and produces tangible benefits.

Our vision is to empower individuals, families, and communities to effectively address health issues and social and economic justice, eliminate health disparities, improve health and quality of life. To achieve this vision, the CHHS is committed to an interprofessional collaborative approach, development of academically distinct programs of study, dissemination of outstanding applied research that advances both the science and practice of health and human services, and the establishment of effective partnerships, collaborations with partners and outreach and service activities that help build healthier communities and the health and human services workforce.
