  • Summary: The project has four goals: I. Build a Comprehensive Alliance of Community Expertise and Resources for Science Learning, II. Improve Capacity of Practicing K-8 Teachers to Enhance Student Learning in Science, III. Increase Quality and Quantity of Pre-Service Teachers in Science Education, and IV. Increase Engagement of K-8 Students in Science Learning Opportunities In/Out of School Time.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Student Science Enrichment Program- Expedition STEM: UNC Wilmington Watson School of Education STEM Summer Enrichment Initiative

  • Partners: Columbus County Schools
  • Summary: Expedition STEM represents a partnership between the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) and Columbus County Public Schools. This is a collaborative project engaging the efforts of local students, teachers, university faculty and university students. Students will enhance understanding of science concepts through scientific inquiry and hands-on experimentation. Sixty middle-school students (ages 12-14) from Columbus County will take part in career explorations and hands-on investigations in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The project works with schools within Columbus County that have underrepresented populations in the sciences: Expedition STEM emphasizes recruitment of minorities, students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, females, and students with disabilities.
