Climbing Wall

The UNCW Student Recreation Center climbing wall stands approximately 28 feet high and provides over 1900 square feet of climbing surface. Routes range in difficulty from "no sweat" slab climbing to an overhanging arete section. The wall is intended for those with no experience to advanced climbers.

Climbing Information

You no longer will need to make a reservation to gain access to our climbing wall. The following precautions are currently in place to aid in the safety of our climbers and attendants. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to our office at adventure@uncw.edu

Top Rope Climbing

...is where the climber utilizes a rope and belayer to ascend vertically up the wall. Our attendants are trained in how to belay and will help you get to the top!

  • Belay devices (ATC) will available to any climber who has successfully completed a belay clinic and approved to belay at our wall. Additional belaying may be provided by the Climbing Wall Attendants.
  • There may be a slight delay between climbers for our team members to clean and prepare any necessary gear. If possible, one attendant should remain behind the desk to assist with gear check-out and answer any questions.
  • Harnesses, shoes, chalk bags, and liquid chalk are available for use at no cost to you.
  • Personal harnesses, shoes and chalk is permitted after proper safety inspection by a Climbing Wall Attendant.
  • Please sanitize your hands before and after climbing.

Bouldering

...is where the climber stays low on the wall and does not need to use a rope or harness. We also supply foam pads that can be positioned under the bouldering area to protect the climber from any falls.

  • Check in at the facility services desk before and after climbing
  • Personal shoes and chalk is permitted
  • Please do not remove or climb above the net. Bouldering is only permitted on the lower three panels
  • Crash Pads are laid out for use at your convenience. Feel free to rearrange them as needed, but please return them to their proper placement when finished
  • Please sanitize your hands before and after climbing

Belay Clinics

The climbing is free, but sometimes the wait for a staff member to belay you can slow you down. Have you ever wished that you could learn how to belay your friends? We can help with that! Whether you’re new to climbing or already know how to belay, claim your spot at one of our skill clinics and learn the proper knots, protocols, and techniques (we use the PLUS method) for our wall. Upon completion of the clinic, you can be checked off by a Seahawk Adventures staff member on your next visit (the check off test must be taken at least 24 hours after your clinic).

To sign up for an Adventure Clinic, please visit our online storefront to reserve your spot! Additional belay clinics will be available for the Spring 2023 semester.
