Campus Life

Vice Chancellor Pat Leonard

A Message from Campus Life

The guiding principle of a university union is the creation of spaces and programs that help students on campus feel welcome and safe. As UNCW's stewards of the college-union ideal, Campus Life is reflecting on our stated values of Love and Support, Integrity, and Diversity and Inclusion. We commit to doing better for all students, especially our students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, who commune, learn, and grow in these spaces daily. We are examining Campus Life spaces to ensure they are accessible, safe, and celebratory of all UNCW students, and we are committed to delivering social and educational programming that amplifies growth and learning about racism and injustice and empowers students to create positive change.

As you may know, we recently lost our leader and mentor, Vice Chancellor Pat Leonard, who continually challenged us with a "What's next" approach toward striving for improvement. We will honor her legacy, our espoused values, and our duty to serve all students equally and inclusively. We commit to listening, learning, and thinking critically about our programs and services to create spaces and experiences where BIPOC students feel safe, cared for, and supported. We recognize that our words are not enough. Through a great deal of self-examination, our professional staff has developed a list of initial action steps to move us toward these goals. We still have more to learn, but we are inspired to do better by the students we serve. We urge you to hold us accountable as we continue a collective journey toward what is next.
