Skills & Experience to Make You Stand Out

The German studies program fosters a critical understanding of German culture through the study of language, literature, art, history, film, media and contemporary culture.

The program also develops strong writing and communicative skills crucial for careers in journalism, public relations, teaching, governmental service, scientific research, pharmaceuticals and international commerce.

Innovative Curriculum

In addition to courses taught by UNCW faculty, you can take German studies classes taught by faculty at other UNC System schools through the UNC Course Exchange. These courses are taught online or via live video conference.

German studies is an ideal second major. Our recent students have majored in international studies, business administration, international and public affairs, community health education, anthropology, political science, geography, biology and philosophy.

How Do I Major in German Studies?

There are no requirements to be admitted to the German major, but German 101 and German 102 (or the equivalent) are prerequisites to German 201, which is the lowest-level course to count toward the German major.
