Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Concentration (BSN to DNP) Admission Information

The School of Nursing at UNCW participates in a comprehensive, holistic admissions review process including quantitative and qualitative criteria for both of our BSN-DNP concentrations.

The Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner concentrations strive for diversity of life experiences and thought within our program.

Our holistic review assesses an applicant’s unique life, professional, and personal experiences and attributes alongside traditional measures of academic achievement such as grades and test scores.

AGPCNP Admission Requirements
  • Degree Requirements: Bachelor's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution.
  • GPA: Overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. A GPA as low as 2.75 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Transcripts and Pre-requisite Courses: Transcript will demonstrate successful completion of academic credits in undergraduate community health, health and physical assessment, nursing research, and statistics. One official transcript is required from each US post-secondary institution attended. 
  • Licensure: Must have a valid unrestricted North Carolina registered nurse license or a compact state license to complete clinical hours in North Carolina.
  • Recommendations: Three professional references. Recommender will submit a survey through the online application tool.
  • Resume: Include the 600 hours of Registered Nurse work experience prior to beginning any clinical courses in the BSN to DNP program.
  • Clinical work history: One-page only
  • Video: Please address all five of the following required prompts and the optional one, if you wish, in a maximum of five minutes. Any content over five minutes will not be viewed.
    • Please share your professional experience which has influenced your interest in becoming a doctorally prepared Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. 
    • Please describe any personal attributes or life experiences that you think have prepared you most to become a doctorally prepared Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner who will care for a diverse population of adult and geriatric patients. 
    • Share a long-term goal that you had, the steps/process you took to obtain that goal, and how you overcame any obstacles that you encountered.  This goal could be academic, personal, or extracurricular in nature. 
    • How will completing a Primary Care Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program align with your professional goals?  
    • Choosing a Doctor of Nursing Practice program is rigorous, but will provide you with a terminal degree in nursing. Choosing this program, describe your understanding of how the DNP differs from the traditional MSN nurse practitioner programs. 
    • Optional: If there is anything else that you would like the admissions committee to know, please share at the end of your video, after the required questions have been answered.   
  • International Applicants: Must present evidence of professional standing in their home countries. This requirement excludes US citizens and lawful permanent residents.
  • Differential Tuition: Differential tuition applies to this program.
