Postdoc Handbook

This handbook is part of our effort to guide you through this stage of your career. You will find an overview of the postdoc position and provide general information to postdocs regarding the nature of their position and appointment at UNCW.

Postdoctoral Scholars and Fellows Resources

  • Postdoc Orientation Course in Canvas

  • UNCW Library: Postdocs have access to both the faculty commons, the graduate student study lounge, and other library spaces.
     
  • Library Liaisons: The liaison librarian can help you with all your information needs.

  • Dining: Postdocs have the opportunity to choose any meal plan options with the University dining program.
     
  • Parking: Postdocs are classified as faculty/staff so they may park at faculty/staff locations on campus. 

  • Recreation: Postdocs have access to various campus recreation facilities including the Pat Leonard Student Recreation Center.
     
  • Information Technology Services: Support for all computing related needs.
     
  • Abrons Student Health Center: provides student-centered, affordable, quality health and preventive services to the students and postdocs of UNCW. 
  • Center For Teaching Excellence: CTE is dedicated to assisting the University in fulfilling its commitment to strengthening undergraduate and graduate instruction. 

  • Center for Faculty Leadership: CFL is dedicated to developing and sustaining a high quality of academic leadership that is central to the mission and goals outlined in the University's strategic plan. 

  • Office of Distance Education and eLearning: resources and support to assist you with the design, development, and delivery of online or web-enhanced course. 

  • Grant writing workshops: familiarize UNCW researchers with services available from Research & Innovation and other support partners. 

  • Get SPARC’Ed: series of grant workshops for the UNCW community.  

  • Research and Innovation: workshops offered by the university.

  • National Postdoctoral Association:  The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit organization that seeks sustainable change and improvement for the postdoctoral experience through collaboration with all stakeholders. 

  • National Postdoctoral Association Career Center: Provides a specialized place where employers can post jobs either for postdocs or early career researchers in a multitude of areas and postdocs can upload their resume or CV for free to apply. 

  • Core Competencies: the NPA provides 6 core competencies identified as critical for success in (and outside) academia. The NPA also provides a self-assessment checklist  to assess your core competencies. 

  • myIDP - Individual Development Plan: myIDP is a unique, web-based career-planning tool tailored to meet the needs of Ph.D. students and postdocs in the sciences. Watch this video on how to take the first step in developing an IDP

  • How to Find Faculty Mentors (Stanford): A guide to selecting the best faculty mentors and how to find, approach, and interview potential mentors from Stanford University. 

  • Minority Postdoc: The premier web portal on the minority postdoctoral experience featuring news, articles, resources, and events about jobs, career advice, professional development, funding, fellowships, mentoring, and diversity issues.  

  • Imagine PhD: ImaginePhD is a free online career exploration and planning tool for Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars in the humanities and social sciences. 

  • Career Planning Resources (NPA): A list of career planning resources from the National Postdoctoral Association, including resources for self-assessment, career exploration, and skill development.
