Postdoctoral Scholars

Postdoctoral scholars are a vital part of the research endeavors at our university, and the UNCW Graduate School serves as the clearinghouse for information related to postdoctoral appointments. The Graduate School serves UNCW’s postdoctoral community, including postdoctoral scholars and their faculty mentors, through the development and implementation of best practices, policies, and activities that advance the career aspirations of postdoctoral scholars and the research mission of the university. The university’s postdoctoral scholars span many departments at UNCW, such as biology and marine biology, marine science, chemistry, physics, computer science, information systems, educational leadership, psychology, and many more. Regardless of the field or ultimate career goals, the Graduate School is here to improve, support and promote postdoctoral training and help prepare scholars for successful careers. 

What is a Postdoctoral Scholar?

The University of North Carolina Wilmington has adopted the definition of postdoctoral scholar from the National Postdoctoral Association: A postdoctoral scholar ("postdoc") is an individual who has received a doctoral degree (or equivalent) and is engaged in a temporary and defined period of mentored advanced training to enhance the professional skills and research independence needed to pursue his or her chosen career path.

Postdoc appointments are characterized by all of the following conditions: 

  • the appointee was recently (within the last five years) awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D., M.D.) or terminal degree 
  • the appointment is temporary 
  • the appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship 
  • the appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic, research, or other career 
  • the appointee works under the mentorship of a faculty member 
  • the appointee has the expectation and freedom to publish or otherwise disseminate the results of their research or scholarship during the period of appointment
