Tutoring Services

Tutoring Experiences Provided

The Ed Lab has an extensive collection of reading materials including children's books, magazines, fiction, non-fiction, reference materials, digital texts, arts and crafts books, and teacher resources. Tutors work with students in a one-on-one setting to provide rich language arts experiences, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students read and respond to reading in a variety of ways, including projects, crafts, writing, drama and discussion.

Tutors and children use a variety of hands-on math tools in each math lesson.  The goal is to provide learners with a visual representation of the math concepts being taught. Math concepts are reinforced through the use of books containing math themes, commercial & teacher made math games.  Meaningful skills practice is also an important part of math instruction.

University students enrolled in middle grades education courses work with children, primarily each spring semester. Children are tutored in a one-on-one setting under Ed Lab staff supervision. Tutors focus on the interests and academic needs of each tutee, connecting all content areas with literacy strategies and instruction.

It is important to note that tutoring is not designed to complete homework. Instead, middle grades tutoring provides opportunities for enrichment and exploration of different content areas through reading, writing and literate conversations.

The Ed Lab provides a wide variety of learning experiences for children.

Writing

Writing is an integral part of each Language Arts tutoring session. Students write in response to stories read and also have opportunities for creative expression through original works.

Technology

University students use software, websites, calculators, audio and video tapes as an integral part of the tutoring process.

Cooking

The Ed Lab has a kitchen classroom where tutors work with children teaching reading and math skills through a cooking lesson.

Games

A wide variety of games are available to strengthen both reading and math concepts.
