Watson College Scholarships

The Kelly '00 and Jason '01, '11 Brett Applied Learning Award in Leadership Studies

The Kelly '00 and Jason '01, '11 Brett Applied Learning Award is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing a minor in Leadership Studies. Preference for the award will be given to student leaders who are pursuing an applied learning opportunity in support of their minor through undergraduate research, service learning, internship or study abroad.


Amy Stuart Scholarship in Education

The Amy Stuart Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student entering their internship semester in the Watson College of Education. 


Assistance League of Greater Wilmington Scholarship in Education

The Assistance League of Greater Wilmington Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to a selection of undergraduate students based on demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Preference for the award will be given to students residing in New Hanover, Brunswick or Pender Counties in North Carolina who express an interest in teaching in one of the listed counties upon graduation. 


Betty Holden Stike Scholarship

The Betty Holden Stike Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to a student who is a rising senior majoring in Elementary Education. Demonstrated financial need is a secondary consideration. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates their potential to make a positive contribution to the teaching profession. 


Carole M. Sims Memorial Scholarship

The Carole M. Sims Memorial Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to a student in the Watson College of Education who has a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference for the award will be given to juniors, seniors and students who have not participated in study abroad. 


Cathy L. Barlow Intern Scholarship in Education

The Cathy L. Barlow Intern Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to a student entering their internship semester in the Watson College of Education that has a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7. The recipient will be selected based on academic ability and special achievement. 


Delta Kappa Gamma (Theta Chapter) Scholarship

The Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship (Theta Chapter) is a need-based scholarship with merit as a secondary consideration. The Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid works in consultation with the Watson College of Education to select the recipient. 


Donald R Watson College of Education Scholarship

The Donald R. Watson College of Education Scholarships are merit scholarships awarded to students who have been accepted into the Watson College of Education or as a UNCW Teaching Fellow. 


Dorothy P. Marshall Scholarship

The Dorothy P. Marshall Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who is pursuing a degree in education. 


Eleanor B Wright Scholarship in Special Education

The Eleanor Boyd Wright Scholarship in Special Education is a merit scholarship awarded to a student majoring in special education or seeking initial teacher licensure in an area of special education. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated academic ability, special achievement, and students who have shown a commitment to the education of children and youth with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.


Fumika Barnhill Thomas Education Scholarship

The Fumika Barnhill Thomas Education Scholarship is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student as determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid with academic ability and special achievement as secondary considerations. The recipient must be pursuing a degree in Elementary Education (K-6), and preference will be given to in-state students. 


Herbert & Sylvia Fisher Scholarship

The Herbert and Sylvia Fisher Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student preparing for a career in teaching. The recipient will be selected on demonstrated academic ability. 


Hines-Hollis Teacher Scholarship in Education

The Hines-Hollis Teacher Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate in their junior year that has the intent to become a classroom teacher, has demonstrated academic ability, and exhibits special achievement. Financial need is a secondary consideration. Preference will be given to students who are graduates of a public high school located in New Hanover or Brunswick County. If no students meet this criteria, the award would be given to a student who graduated from a public school in North Carolina. Additional preference will be given to students who have a demonstrated record of employment of at least 10-15 hours a week as a student prior to their junior year.


Holland Wheeler Scholarship in Education

The Holland Wheeler Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student with plans to become a teacher. Special consideration will be given to students who have demonstrated experience in or commitment to working with underserved or underprivileged populations, who have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic or educational disadvantage or disabilities, who are first generation in their family to attend college, or who have a record of community involvement and demonstrated leadership in working with historically underrepresented populations.


James Ozborn Carr Endowed Scholarship

The James Ozborn Carr Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who graduated from an accredited high school in southeastern North Carolina. For the purpose of this scholarship, this region shall be defined as New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, Bladen, Sampson, Duplin, Pender and Onslow Counties. Financial need is a secondary consideration for this award. Demonstrated character and leadership potential are also considered in determining the recipient. 


Jean Thorpe Case Scholarship in Education

The Jean Thorpe Case Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Financial need is a secondary consideration. 


Jeryl Wilkins Peebles Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education

The Jeryl Wilkins Peebles Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. 


Murrie Lee Scholarship in Special Education

The L. Murrie Lee Scholarship in Special Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement with financial need as a secondary consideration. The recipient must be pursuing a degree offered by the Watson College of Education, Teacher Education program, majoring in special education or seeking initial teacher licensure in an area of special education. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to education of children and youth with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.


Lee V. Landing Scholarships

The Lee V. Landing Jr. Endowment Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in Elementary Education, Middle School Education or Special Education who has strong academic achievement. Demonstrated character and leadership potential are also considerations in determining the recipient. 


Mueller Family Student Teaching Scholarship

The Mueller Family Student Teaching Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated academic ability. Preference will be given to a student who will be student teaching during the time of the award.


Norman R. and Betty Jo Russell Kaylor Scholarship in Education

The Norman R. and Betty Jo Russell Kaylor Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Financial need is a secondary consideration. 


Polly Sweyer Scholarship in Education

The Polly Sweyer Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Financial need is a secondary consideration. 


Progress Energy Education Scholarship

The Progress Energy Education Scholarship (Science and Math) is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing an education degree in either science or mathematics at the K-12 level who has demonstrated academic ability. 


Rory Elizabeth Michaelson Scholarship in Education

The Rory Elizabeth Michaelson Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student who is pursuing a degree or licensure in the area of Special Education and has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Financial need is a secondary consideration. Preference will be given to students entering the academic year when they will complete their internship.


Teresa S. Lee Scholarship in Education

The Teresa S. Lee Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate student in their internship semester who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Preference will be given to students involved in service to the community or the profession. 


William Thomas Wasnick Scholarship in Education

The William Thomas Wasnick Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to a rising junior who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement, with financial need as a secondary consideration. Preference will be given to students majoring in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education or Secondary Education and to students who are residents of Minnesota.


Betty A Whitley-Wood Endowed Scholarship

The Betty A. Whitley-Wood Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship, awarded to juniors or seniors, with merit as a secondary consideration. Preference will be given to students majoring in Special Education or Marine Biology.

Vic and Leigh Venters Fellowship in Special Education

The Vic and Leigh Venters Fellowship in Special Education is a need-based fellowship awarded to a graduate student majoring in Special Education who intends to work with children with autism. The recipient will be selected based on financial need as determined by the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid.

Ann Royer Corley Scholarship

The Ann Royer Corley Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in the Watson College of Education who excels academically. The amount for this scholarship is not the same each year, and is typically awarded half in the fall and half in the spring semester. 


Barbara Beckwith Dobo Scholarship in Elementary Education

The Barbara Beckwith Dobo Scholarship in Elementary Education is a merit scholarship awarded to a student based on demonstrated academic ability. To be eligible, students must be an Elementary Education major and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Preference for this award will be given to prior recipients, provided they are still eligible. 


Doss Family Scholarship in Education

The Doss Family Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, with academic ability and special achievement as secondary considerations. The selected recipient must be pursuing a degree in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education or Secondary Education.


Dr. John T. Hoggard Family Scholarship in Education

The Dr. John T. Hoggard Family Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. 


Ellen Dunn Wells Scholarship in Education

The Ellen Dunn Wells Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid who is also pursuing an internship. Special consideration may be given to veterans or active-duty members of the military.


Frederick William Lewis III Scholarship in Special Education

The Frederick William Lewis III Scholarship in Special Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, with academic ability and special achievement as secondary considerations. The recipient must be entering their internship semester, and preference will be given to applicants who volunteer with Special Olympics, Miracle League or other recreation service dedicated to supporting those with disabilities.


Hattie M. Strong Foundation Scholarship in Education

The Hattie M. Strong Foundation Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who has achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA in the two semesters prior to their final year of study. Preference will be given to undergraduate students who have exhibited outstanding success and enthusiasm in field experiences prior to the final year of the program or graduate students whose life experiences prior to enrollment reveal the same traits. Applicants will be required to submit a personal statement of no more than 350 words as part of the application process. 


Janis Norris Education Scholarship

The Janis C. Norris Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. 


Jay M. Robinson Scholars Program

The Jay M. Robinson Scholars Program is a merit scholarship awarded to students who have demonstrated academic ability and have made a commitment to becoming a North Carolina teacher or educational administrator. Financial need is a secondary consideration. 


Jewel and Joseph Cross Scholarship in Education

The Cross Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to a licensure-only or Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) student who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. 


Joan Clifford Scholarship in Education

The Joan Clifford Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student based on demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Preference will be given to non-traditional students. 


Peggy and Jim Mahony Scholarship in Education

The Peggy and Jim Mahony Scholarship in Education is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Financial need is a secondary consideration. 


Steven A. Moore Scholarship in Education

The Steven A. Moore Scholarship in Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in becoming a teacher and has demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Demonstrated academic ability and special achievement are secondary considerations.


Tannis F. Nelson Endowed Scholarship

The Tannis F. Nelson Endowed Scholarship is a merit scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student who has demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. 


Vic and Leigh Venters Scholarship in Special Education

The Vic and Leigh Venters Scholarship in Special Education is a need-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Special Education who intends to work with children with autism. The recipient will be selected based on financial need as determined by the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid. 

External Scholarships

To qualify, applicants must be working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in: occupational therapy, physical therapy, recreation therapy, psychology, pre-medical, special education, nursing, speech-language pathology, or social work and intend to serve persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities after graduation.

The scholarship will be available to qualified applicants residing in one of the following 38 counties: Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Hertford, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, Tyrrell, Washington, Wayne or Wilson.

FinAid was established in the fall of 1994 as a public service. This award-winning site has grown into the most comprehensive source of student financial aid information, advice and tools -- on or off the web.

Access to FinAid is free for all users and there is no charge to link to the site.

You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you want to apply for federal and state financial aid. Many colleges and universities, especially public institutions, also require the FAFSA. You must submit the FAFSA every year that you want aid. The FAFSA is available in several formats, including online, PDF and paper versions.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is a merit-based Federal Title IV program designed to encourage highly qualified teachers to serve in low-income schools in high-need fields.

A statewide program designed to provide sequenced educational scholarship opportunities for child care center teachers, directors, and family child care home providers who work in regular settings.

The Yolanda Norwood Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Yolanda Norwood, Vice-President of the North Carolina Chapter of UN Women and a member of the Board of the Coastal Carolina United Nations Association.

This scholarship is to be granted annually in the amount of $300 to support one UNCW student on the basis of merit. The student should be devoted to improving the lives of women and/or children as demonstrated through academic study and/or activities outside of school.
