About the play
Everybody is a modern riff on the 15th century morality play, Everyman. This comedic adaptation follows the character, Everybody, a single person chosen to embark on life’s greatest journey. At each performance, our cast members are assigned their roles on stage by lottery. It’s all a matter of chance. Or fate. Or divine intervention. You decide.
more audition announcements coming soon...
About the play: Everybody by Branden-Jacobs Jenkins is a contemporary dramedy adaptation of the anonymously attributed medieval morality play, Everyman. I recommend being familiar with both texts, if possible. Copies of Everybody are available to borrow from the Theatre Department Office during regular business hours. Everyman is available to read online for free.
Casting Needs: This cast of 9 is written for highly flexible casting in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, age, body type, size, disability, and ‘type.’ All performers of any experience level are invited to attend auditions. The cast will also include a number of understudy opportunities (which will be essential for the needs of this production).
The most important requirements: Actors will be asked to memorize and be prepared to play multiple roles. Actors will be required to memorize lines over the summer and begin the Fall semester off-book. This is non-negotiable.
Auditioners should prepare a memorized 60-90 second monologue. Monologues may be cut from stage plays, poems, fiction, or other text. Please do not use a piece from a film, television show, YouTube, or other filmed performance. We want to see you, not a replication of another actor’s performance. I recommend poetic or lyrical contemporary text for monologues, dramatic or comedic in genre. Some playwrights in this category: Annie Baker, Jordan Harrison, Anne Washburn, Lucas Hnath, and Sarah Ruhl.
UNCW Theatre is committed to making auditions, callbacks, and productions accessible to all students. If you have an accessibility need that has not already been addressed, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Wellman directly. This may include, but is not limited to, physical access to the Cultural Arts Building entrances or performance and rehearsal spaces, alternate script formats, or assistance during callbacks, and additional mobility support. If can assist in making your audition/callback experience smoother in terms of access, please let us know.
Everybody Callbacks
The callback list and any sides/instructions will be emailed to all students (UNCW email) who auditioned, regardless of whether or not you are being called back, by no later than 11:00 PM on Monday, April 22. If you have not received the email by that time, please email Dr. Wellman at wellmane@uncw.edu. Callbacks for Everybody will be held on Tuesday, April 23 from 6-9 PM. You will be notified by stage management if you are required for the callbacks. *
*Even if you are not called back, you may still be cast in the show. Please check the cast list carefully when it is released.
