Seahawk Stories: Nakyah McNeal

Nakyah McNeal has always been fascinated with people and their experiences. She contemplated a career in psychology because of it, but after taking just one introductory class in social work, she fell in love with the field. “Social work focused on the things I was passionate about: advocating for people, building relationships and making change,” said McNeal, who earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and a minor in leadership studies and psychology.

Nakyah McNeal stands in her graduation robe in front of a large Seahawk sculpture on the UNCW campus.

Who Isn’t F*cking Crazy?!

Who Isn’t F*cking Crazy?! is a podcast launched by Doug Engelman, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of sociology and Stacey Kolomer, Ph.D., School of Social Work director, that focuses on breaking the mental health stigma. Engelman and Kolomer use the experiences and insights of guests across the mental health spectrum to help us all understand that most people are dealing with diagnoses of mental disorders, either their own or that of a loved one. Peers, family members, clinicians, and educators share their stories to help reduce the stigma of mental illness. Listen on Apple, Spotify and Google podcast platforms!
