DAISY Award

The purpose of this program is to provide to colleges/schools of nursing a national recognition program they may use to demonstrate appreciation to faculty for their commitment and inspirational influence on their nursing students.

The Foundation hopes that, in some way, this program will contribute to a positive work environment for faculty in schools. Each DAISY Award Honoree will be recognized at a public ceremony and will receive: a beautiful certificate, a DAISY Faculty Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch.

An acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died (at the age of 33) from complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Patrick’s family was very touched by the remarkable compassion and clinical skill demonstrated by Patrick’s nurses during his illness, so they created DAISY to recognize exceptional nurses everywhere.

Anyone can nominate a full-time UNCW School of Nursing nursing faculty member who is a registered nurse. Click the 'Nominate' button and create or sign in to your account. Complete the electronic nomination application with your name, phone number and email; the nominee's name; and your story about why this faculty member is so special and how their contributions align with the following criteria:

• Exemplifies the SON values of integrity, excellence, caring, and service
• Empowers nursing professionals to advance the health of diverse individuals and communities
• Advances excellence in teaching and learning
• Develops collaborative working relationships with students and colleagues
• Demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching, learning, and nursing that inspires and motivates students
• Is fair and unbiased in his/her treatment of individual students and colleagues
• Demonstrates interest in and respect for learners
• Serves a role model and mentor for professional nursing

One extraordinary nursing faculty honoree will be recognized at a celebration each December and May. The honoree receives a certificate, a pin, and a hand carved Healer’s Touch sculpture from Zimbabwe.
