As a proud 1996 graduate of the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (SHAHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, it is both a personal and professional privilege to welcome you to this exceptional academic community. My journey began right here, and I can personally attest to the transformative power of the education, mentorship, and experiences that SHAHS provides.
At SHAHS, our 65 faculty and staff and 1,800 student majors are united by a shared commitment to health, wellness, and human development across the lifespan. Our programs are designed to prepare students for dynamic careers in healthcare, education, recreation, tourism, and community service—fields that are essential to the well-being of individuals and society.
Our undergraduate programs reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Students in Exercise Science (EXS) develop a strong foundation in human physiology, exercise physiology and biomechanics, preparing for careers in physical therapy, athletic training, cardiac rehabilitation, and strength and conditioning. Many continue on to graduate studies in allied health professions. The Healthful Living and Fitness Education (HFE) program prepares future k-12 educators and wellness professionals and offers a unique path for those interested in personal training, sport coaching, corporate wellness, and community-based fitness. Our Public Health (PBH) program trains students to address health disparities and promote wellness at the many levels. Graduates find roles in public health departments, nonprofit organizations, and healthcare systems, or pursue advanced degrees in areas such as epidemiology, health policy, or global health.
In Recreation Therapy (RTH), students learn to use recreational activities as therapeutic tools to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses. These graduates work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and long-term care facilities, helping clients achieve greater independence and well-being. Our Respiratory Therapy (RSP) program offers two distinct pathways: an entry-level Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) and a degree advancement option (RRT-BSRT) for already credentialed respiratory therapists. The entry-level BSRT program prepares students to become highly competent, compassionate respiratory therapists ready to serve in hospitals, clinics, and critical care settings. The degree advancement program is designed for working professionals who already hold the RRT credential and wish to complete their bachelor’s degree. Our Tourism, Recreation & Sport (TRS) program opens doors to careers in event planning, resort and park management, sports administration, and community recreation. Graduates from this program create experiences that bring people together and enrich lives.
We also offer distinctive undergraduate minors such as Assistance Dog Training, Gerontology, Whole Health and Wellness Studies, Tourism, Recreation & Sport, and Yoga Studies. These options allow students to tailor their education to their unique interests and career goals.
At the graduate level, SHAHS offers advanced degrees that prepare professionals to lead, educate, and innovate. The Master of Science in Applied Gerontology (GRN) equips graduates to serve the growing aging population through roles in healthcare, nonprofit leadership, policy development, and senior services. The Master of Science in Athletic Training (ATR) prepares students to become certified athletic trainers, working with athletes and active individuals in schools, clinics, and professional sports settings. The Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) develops future healthcare leaders who manage hospitals, clinics, and public health systems, with a focus on improving access, quality, and efficiency in care delivery. The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Physical Education and Health (PEH MAT) leads to initial teaching licensure, preparing graduates to teach and inspire students in K-12 schools. The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Physical Education and Health (PEH MED) is designed for current educators seeking to advance their careers in curriculum development, coaching, or educational leadership.
At SHAHS, learning extends beyond the classroom. Our students engage in internships, service-learning, and research that prepare them to lead with compassion, creativity, and confidence. They graduate not only with knowledge, but with a deep sense of purpose and a readiness to serve.
As someone who once walked these same halls, sat in these classrooms, and learned from some of the same dedicated faculty, I can say without hesitation that a Seahawk education is life-changing. It shaped who I am as a professional and as a person. It taught me the value of service, the importance of empathy, and the power of using your skills to uplift others. Whether you're just beginning your journey or continuing your professional growth, SHAHS will challenge you, support you, and prepare you to make a real difference in the world.
Thank you for exploring the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences.
