My first year as UNCW Chancellor exceeded my expectations, and I have our students, faculty and staff to thank for many remarkable achievements in 2022-23.

Calling Together the Seahawk Community

UNCW officially started the 2022-23 academic year in Seahawk style by welcoming nearly 5,000 new students, including first-year, transfer and graduate students, through time-honored Seahawk traditions known as “UNCWelcome.”

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s marching band closed the installation ceremony with a surprise performance. The Blue and Gold Marching Machine’s appearance was a gift from A&T Chancellor Harold Martin, representing the collaboration UNCW enjoys with its sister institutions.

UNCW closed 2022 by graduating 2,442 students (1,649 bachelor’s, 772 master’s and 21 doctoral) during its 103rd commencement exercises Dec. 16-17. On May 12 and 13, 3,183 graduates (2,408 bachelor’s, 696 master’s and 79 doctoral degrees) were officially honored with degrees.

Academic Evolution

UNCW’s College of Arts and Sciences transitioned to two new colleges to better address the future needs of the region and further the mission, vision and evolution of academics at the university. The university formally launched the two new colleges on July 1, 2023 — the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts and the College of Science and Engineering — and welcomed the founding deans to the Seahawk family.

A Wilmington native, CHSSA Dean Dr. Stephanie B. Caulder comes to the university with nearly 25 years of administrative experience, most recently as the dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Radford University in Virginia.  

A professor in the Department of Computer Science, CSE Dean Dr. Ronald J. Vetter has more than two decades of administrative and leadership experience, having previously served as the university’s associate provost for research and dean of the graduate school.

Dr. Carol McNulty, associate provost for undergraduate education and faculty affairs, was appointed interim dean of the Watson College of Education.

Dr. William D. Schafer

Dr. William D. Schafer was named interim vice chancellor of student affairs. A veteran student affairs professional with more than 40 years in higher education, he has held leadership positions at West Virginia University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Texas at El Paso and CU Boulder.

Dr. Jack C. Watson II

Dr. Jack C. Watson II was named dean of the College of Health and Human Services. He joins UNCW with 16 years of administrative experience and an extensive background in leadership development. From 2019-22 he served as dean of West Virginia University’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. He previously served as associate dean, assistant dean and chair of the Department of Sport Sciences.

UNCW educates and graduates thousands each year – that will not change. We will continue to improve the support they receive along the way and graduate better prepared, educated, informed and caring 21st century citizens.
UNCW is here for our students because of our faculty and staff. Their leadership through service is a constant in the life of the university.
UNCW will continue to work with state leaders to pursue additional funding for critical workforce programs, research and teaching initiatives. We share a common purpose: to make a difference, to learn, to grow and improve our campuses and our communities.
As North Carolina’s coastal university, UNCW focuses on solving problems of local importance and addresses issues of global relevance. Alumni owned businesses, teachers, nurses, researchers - UNCW’s impact is in our schools, our hospitals, on our bookshelves and under our microscopes.

As a scholarship recipient, I was able to make the most of my time at UNCW. I completed an honors college research project on academic interventions, studied abroad in Italy, Denmark, and England and developed my leadership skills as the president of Student AmbassadorsThese experiences will have an impact on the rest of my life and the lives of the students in my classroom.
