Provost's News
In the spirit of Thanksgiving and in recognition of the many needs in our community, all faculty and staff are invited to participate in the annual Alderman Hall Fall Food Drive by bringing a non-perishable food item to the Alderman Hall Lobby. A fall-themed treat will be available for you upon delivery during the food drive hours, as well as an opportunity to enter to win a Thanksgiving dinner for eight.

As of October 1, 2025, the federal government has entered a shutdown. We recognize this may raise concerns for many of you, especially those involved in federally sponsored research and programs. While congressional leaders continue working toward a budget resolution, it is possible there may be impacts on federally sponsored programs, services and research at UNCW. Some impacts may be immediate, while others may occur over time depending on how long the shutdown remains in place. If you have questions regarding the following, please contact the listed office:
- Federally sponsored research or programs, please contact your SPARC representative.
- Federally sponsored grant-funded positions:
- Employees in a research-related grant-funded position – SPARC Director Tamara Hatch (hatcht@uncw.edu)
- Employees in a non-research grant-funded position – SPARC Director Tamara Hatch (hatcht@uncw.edu)
- Graduate students – Graduate School (gradassistantships@uncw.edu)
- International students and faculty – Office of International Students and Scholars (international@uncw.edu)
- Student financial aid – Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (scholarships@uncw.edu)
The university is closely monitoring developments and working with the UNC System, our congressional delegation and other campus partners to understand the impact. Each federal agency applies its own protocols during a shutdown, which may affect the administration, distribution and funding of contracts, cooperative agreements and grants. We will be evaluating the agency-specific guidance over the coming days and will provide support and communications through any disruptions this may cause.
As of late January 2025, we are aware there are questions about the impact that federal and state actions may have on our operations – particularly around funded research, grants, and educational programs. We are closely monitoring what continues to be an evolving landscape with rapid changes, and we are assessing any next steps that need to occur.
To best support affected personnel, Academic Affairs faculty and staff should forward any communications received related to federally funded work to the appropriate email(s) in the following list.
- Research Impacts – Research and Innovation (Associate Provost Stuart Borrett, borretts@uncw.edu)
- Research Grant Awards – SPARC (Director Tamara Hatch, hatcht@uncw.edu)
- Note: If you receive a stop-work order, or any other communication, directly from your program officer or sponsor and SPARC is not copied, please forward immediately to AOR@uncw.edu.
- Graduate Students, Graduate Assistantships, and/or Graduate Student Employees – Graduate School (gradassistantships@uncw.edu)
- Grant-Funded Positions:
- Employees in a research-related grant-funded position – SPARC (Director Tamara Hatch, hatcht@uncw.edu)
- Employees in a non-research grant-funded position – SPARC (Director Tamara Hatch, hatcht@uncw.edu)
- Graduate Students – Graduate School (GradSchool@uncw.edu)
- Principal Investigators (PIs) – If there are questions, SPARC is available for one-on-one consultations regarding the status of your program(s). Contact AOR@uncw.edu to schedule.
