The Office of the Provost supports and operationalizes the Division of Academic Affairs. The office serves as the primary support for the life-cycle of UNCW faculty members, and provides resources for staff within the division.
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs James J. Winebrake is the chief academic officer of the university and member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet. The office is further made up by the Provost’s Cabinet and divisional administration staff.
The Office of the Provost operationalizes the Division of Academic Affairs, the central division for implementing the academic mission of the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Through effective academic policies, practices and programs, it provides leadership for excellence in teaching, scholarship and creative work as well as service to local, regional and global communities.
The office allocates resources to recruit and retain faculty scholars and researchers and to create a learning environment that encourages students to:

- Develop problem solving and communication skills
- Foster an appreciation for all forms of scholarship
- Value lifelong learning
