We will expand our capability to develop and distribute information about space use on the UNCW campus. The space needs of the university can be better served by increasing the awareness of space issues on campus and bringing faculty and staff into the space management process.
The university strives to ensure the fullest and best use of facilities. The Executive Committee on Space oversees activity in all facilities owned or leased by UNCW and assigned to academic units. Space is assigned on the basis of need and in order to meet the recruitment and retention goals of the campus.
Space Sharing & Reassignment
Facilities are subject to reassignment. Evaluation of departmental space needs are based on assessments of present and future requirements by room type and a determination of the best use of facilities. We will routinely evaluate space use and distribution on campus and may recommend alternative uses or reassignments to better serve overall UNCW needs.
To avoid the duplication of space, equipment and staff services, it is necessary for departments to share certain facilities. This concept goes beyond office service areas and storage spaces to include machine shops, electronic shops and other research support activities - departmental office and research "silos" can no longer be afforded.
Space Planning and Management would serve as a central point through which renovation projects pass as they are considered by the various campus decision-making bodies.
Space requirements are subject to growth or reductions in faculty, staff and student numbers, departmental objectives and functions, and changes in research activity and the technology associated with research. Part of this effort will be to update space planning standards to reflect changes within the disciplines and activities of campus units.
Core Values
These core values provide a framework for assignment and management of university facilities. They are vital to the concept of centralized space management and coordination efforts under the guidance of the Space Planning and Allocation Committee and the Executive Committee on Space.
- All space is owned and allocated by the university
- Space should be allocated equitably among divisions and departments
- Best utilization of space
- Sharing space and function
- Regular assessment of divisional and departmental space assignments
- Best utilization of resources
