UNCW is proud to be a pedestrian-first campus.

That means that all traffic including cars, bikes and skateboards are to give the right of way to anyone traveling on foot.

Even so, students who commute to campus by foot or by skating should use caution when traveling to and from campus and when crossing busy intersections.

There are crosswalks at the three major entrances to campus: South College Road and Randall Parkway, South College Road and Hurst Drive, and Racine Drive and Randall Parkway.

Pedestrians and skaters should always use the crosswalks and should never assume a vehicle is going to stop on their behalf.

Skateboards & Rollerblades

Responsibilities

  1. Yield to anyone on foot
  2. Do not ride in the road or parking decks
  3. Dismount at crosswalks
  4. Do not assume a vehicle is going to stop for you
  5. Use extra caution if you choose to use headphones while skating/blading

Skating & Blading Is Prohibited From:

  1. Steps
  2. Flower planters
  3. Brick patios
  4. Curbs and benches
  5. Parking decks

ADA-Compliant Mobility Devices

Any device needed because of a disability is allowed on sidewalks, multi-use paths and indoors. Non-ADA-compliant vehicles, including skateboards and hoverboards, are not permitted indoors.

Crossing South College Road

The intersections of both South College and Randall Parkway and South College Road and Hurst Drive are equipped with crosswalks and stoplights.

Crossing the street where there are no pedestrian facilities is dangerous and highly discouraged.
