Sea gems at the sea turtle hospital

Calling all girls looking to Explore Marine Science!

UNCW MarineQuest Sea GEMS school year program provides girls ages 12-14 the opportunity to dive into marine science one Saturday afternoon a month.  Each afternoon the program explores a different field of marine science and highlights female scientists from UNCW and across the community.

When: One Saturday afternoon a month from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Where: UNCW Center for Marine Science

Session Subjects:

Ocean windmill

Session 1: Saturday, September 16, 2017

Protecting the coast using alternative energy

Learn about alternative energies and how their use benefits our coast.  We will look at 2 renewable alternative energy sources in this Sea GEMS session: biodiesel and wind energy.  Investigate the challenges of wind energy in North Carolina.  Compete against fellow GEMS to design and build the most effective wind turbine model.
Beakers with different pH levels

Session 2: Saturday, October 14, 2017

pH in Balance

Increased CO2 in the atmosphere is impacting the acidity of the ocean.  Learn about ocean pH and the interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean.  Investigate the fragile balance required for many marine organisms.  Get hands on experience with titrations and measuring pH.
Wave breaking

Session 3: Saturday, November 4, 2017

Moving Sands

Wind and waves are continuously moving coastal sands.  Meet an inspiring UNCW Coastal Geologist.  Investigate sand composition from a geological point of view and learn the physics behind the transport.

Session 4: Saturday, December 2, 2017

Sea Turtle Science

Not only are sea turtles charismatic, but they are truly special creatures that call the NC coast home.  Meet a sea turtle conservationist and learn about what we are doing to protect and increase our knowledge of sea turtle nesting behavior.
