Lecturer or Assistant Professor

Department of Social Work

Vacancy #29F159

Position #6959

The Department of Social Work at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a nine-month academic position at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor, depending on qualifications.  The appointment will begin Fall, 2009, with specific responsibilities in the BSW Extension Program located in Jacksonville, N. C., a major military community.

The Department offers both the BSW and MSW programs from the strengths perspective, with emphasis on practice labs, small classes, and specially reinforced field instruction.  The MSW program offers only the clinical concentration, with courses on specific models of practice such as solution-focused and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

We are seeking a person with expertise in any of the foundation content areas, with particular emphasis on courses related to HBSE, policy, diversity, and research.   Expertise or experience with the military community is preferred, because one of the expectations is the development of partnerships with this community.  If appointed at the Assistant Professor rank (tenure-track), this faculty member would be expected to engage in service and research in addition to teaching.

Qualifications include an accredited Master’s Degree in Social Work.  If appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor, the qualifications also include the doctorate in social work or closely related discipline.

The UNCW Department of Social Work offers a unique education with a strengths-based generalist BSW (100 students) program and a recently accredited strengths-based clinical MSW program (40 students).   Among the special initiatives of the Department is the Child Welfare Collaborative, the Strengths Collaborative, and a new project on the African-American male.  Information on the Department of Social Work can be found at www.uncw.edu/swk.
