Read Across America at Tarawa Terrace 2 Elementary School
On Tuesday, March 3, 2009, Dr. Colleen Walker, representing the Watson School of Education, read to students in a first grade and third grade class at Tarwa Terrace II Elementary School on Camp LeJune. She read books written by Dr. Seuss in honor of his birthday, the anniversary of which was March 2nd.
First Dr. Walker read The Sneeches to the third graders. The third grade students made excellent predictions and connected the events of the story to events they learned about for Black History month. After hearing how the Sneeches with stars on their bellies mistreated the Sneeches without stars, the children agreed that the Sneeches should all learn to get along and accept each others’ differences.
Next she read the book There’s a Wocket in my Pocket to the first grade class. Students enjoyed the story, laughing at the funny friends the boy had in his house. They said their favorite parts were the funny creatures and the rhyming words. The first grade students were able to pick out several rhyming words.
