Harris Teeter Donates TV to Ed Lab at the Watson School of Education

Harris Teeter, Inc., recently donated a 40-inch, plasma screen television to the Betty Stike Educational Laboratory at the UNCW Watson School of Education.

The university received the TV for signing up the most participants in the 2008-09 “Together in Education” (TIE) program in Harris Teeter’s southeastern North Carolina region. The Watson School formed a partnership with Harris Teeter in 2002 that permitted UNCW to become the first university selected to participate in the TIE program, which allows VIC card customers to designate the schools of their choice to receive a portion of their proceeds on Harris Teeter brand merchandise.

Dean Barlow with The TIE program operates August-May, and participants must enroll annually. This year, the UNCW Board of Visitors, in partnership with the Division for University Advancement and the Office of Marketing and Communications, promoted participation in the TIE program through e-newsletters and printed publications for students, faculty, staff and alumni, on the university’s electronic message board, and at a campus involvement carnival.

The Stike Educational Lab provides UNCW education students with opportunities to tutor elementary and middle school children, one-on-one, in reading, writing and mathematics. Students practice the methods they are learning in courses. Schoolchildren receive personalized instruction that focuses on their strengths, needs and interests. The TV will be a useful tool for the tutors and children, director Brian Brinkley said.
