The 2009 Roy E. Harkin Teacher Recognition Award Announced! Congratulations to PDS Partnership Teacher Recipient Sheri Dodson from Burgaw Middle School, Pender County, 7th Grade Mathematics Teacher!
The Roy E. Harkin Teacher Recognition Award was established in 2008 in memory of Dr. Roy E. Harkin who served as the chair of the Education Department at UNCW from 1976 to 1979, and then as Dean of the School of Education until 1991. This award is funded by the family and friends of Dr. Harkin in recognition of his commitment to partnerships with public schools and his appreciation for the contributions of public school educators to the preparation of prospective teachers.
We are delighted to present this first-time award to Ms. Sheri Dodson, 7th grade mathematics teacher at Burgaw Middle School!
The award is designed to recognize a public school teacher who has contributed to the preparation of future teachers by demonstrating excellence as a partnership teacher and/or site coordinator. Ms. Dodson was nominated by her site coordinator and university supervisor and also was highly acclaimed as a compassionate and life-changing mentor by her intern. Nominations for this award are accepted on a rotational basis from our 12 PDS partnership systems…Pender County being our first!
Ms. Dodson was selected by a panel of public school and university educators and will be honored May 8th during the UNCW Watson School of Education Commencement Ceremony in UNCW Hanover Gym. She will be awarded a Certificate of Recognition and a check for $150. Ms. Dodson’s name will be the first to appear on a plaque that will be displayed in the atrium of the Watson School of Education.
