Spring 2009 - Karen Gail Kessinger
Karen is a rising senior in the Elementary Education Program. She currently resides in Jacksonville, NC where she is working on her BS in Elementary Education through UNCW's school of Education's extension program. Her husband is an active duty Marine. The Kessingers have been foster parents for seven years. They currently have four children and two foster children in their family.
Karen's dad, brother and sister are teachers. She stated in her essay, I am excited that I am closer to my dream of being a teacher and following in my dad's footsteps. He was an incredible teacher who made a difference in the lives of so many students. I want to be that teacher.
Karen, with your persistence, skillful role juggling and commitment to excellence, we have no doubt you will be that teacher.
In their own words.......
Dear Alumi Chapter Members,
I would like to personally thank you for the wonderful scholarship you have awarded me. It was unexpected, but greatly appreciated. I have been back in school since January 2007 when my husband returned from Iraq. After a long one year deployment, I decided it was time for me to do something for myself.
I have worked very hard while trying not to take too much time away from all of our children. This scholarship will allow me to purchase supplies needed for my internship, as well as help with tuition and other expenses.
I have wanted to become a teacher for as long as I can remember. I can't believe that I am finally almost there. I am honored to be graduating from UNCW's Watson College of Education. Thank you again.
