Summer 2013 Learn-to-Swim Program
The UNCW Department of Campus Recreation offers swim lessons in the form of group lessons (youth) and private lessons (one-on-one). All lessons are held in the UNCW Student Recreation Center Aquatics Facility. For the summer group session, we are offering American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 1 and Level 2 classes only. Please refer to the level descriptions for more information.
Registration: All registrations can be completed by visiting the Student Recreation Center Office.
Group Lessons
Monday – Thursday Session (2 Weeks) – Jul. 22, 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31, Aug. 1
Time(s): 4 – 4:45 p.m.
Available Levels and Descriptions
Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills
Average Age: 5 to 6 Years
Time: 4 – 4:45 p.m.
Location: Shallow Portion of SRC Pool
Purpose - To begin developing positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water for children at least 5 years of age.
Learning Objectives:
- Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
- Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
- Bobbing
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
- Front and back glides and floats
- Recover to vertical position
- Roll from front to back and back to front
- Tread water using arm and hand actions
- Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
- Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
- Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help
- Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety
Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Average Age: 7 to 8 Years
Time: 4 – 4:45 p.m.
Location: Shallow Portion of SRC Pool
Purpose - To give participants success with fundamental skills, including learning how to float without support and to recover to a vertical position.
Learning Objectives:
- Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side
- Fully submerge and hold breath
- Bobbing
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
- Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
- Front and back glides and floats
- Recover to vertical position
- Roll from front to back and back to front
- Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
- Tread water using arm and leg actions
- Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
- Finning arm action
- Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency, knowing how to call for help and perform simple non-swimming assists
- Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety
- Learn to look carefully before entering the water
- Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation
Important Information for Group Lessons
- The minimum enrollment for each lesson is 5, and maximum enrollment for each lesson is 10 individuals. If a lesson does not reach the minimum amount required, we reserve the right to combine or cancel the class.
- Any photographs taken by the Learn to Swim staff become property of the Department of Campus Recreation. These photos may be used in the future for promotional material.
- The pool temperature is maintained at 83 degrees.
- There will not be any make-up lessons beyond the scheduled classes.
- There will not be any refunds provided after the second lesson of the session.

- Faculty/Staff/Student Dependent - $48.00 Per Child, Per Session
- Faculty/Staff Dependent Non-Member - $60.00 Per Child, Per Session
Private Lessons
For interested parties who cannot fit group lessons into their busy schedules or just prefer one-on-one instruction. Once registered, an instructor will be assigned and will contact you within 1 week to introduce themselves, discuss what you are interested in learning, and to set up your first lesson. Private lessons will be arranged at a time that fits both yours and your instructors schedules, and may be scheduled anytime the Indoor Pool is open for its normal Lap Swimming and/or Recreational Swimming hours (please see facility schedule for more information).

Access to SRC Facility and Attendance Policy for Private Lessons
In order to gain access into the facility your instructor will meet you in the Front Lobby area (before the turnstiles) to escort you to the SRC Indoor Pool for each lesson.
Instructors will arrive to each arranged lesson 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled start. If participants do not arrive by the scheduled time, instructors will wait for 15 minutes. In the event that a participant does not attend the scheduled lesson, the instructor will attempt to re-schedule. In the event of a second “No Show,” it will count as an entire lesson.
LESSON CANCELLATIONS MUST BE MADE 24 HOURS PRIOR TO THE SCHEDULED MEETING.
