Faculty Associate Program

Call for Applications

The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce and solicit applications for the 2014-15 Faculty Associate program. The initiative provides an opportunity for professional and leadership development among UNCW faculty members by enhancing the participants’ knowledge of and skills in academic administration. The appointee will work with the Provost and Academic Affairs administrative staff on a part-time basis as a learner, observer, and participant, making contributions primarily in academic affairs. As part of his or her appointment, this individual will work on one or more projects which will be identified in collaboration with the Faculty Associate, in response to needs within the division in alignment with that individual’s strengths and interests. Examples of projects might include: undertaking research and generating reports on specific topics of interest in the Division of Academic Affairs; developing materials and strategies in support of division initiatives; and coordinating and/or working on projects associated with the UNC General Administration’s implementation of the Our Time Our Future strategic plan. The person named to this position also will participate in Academic Coordinating Council meetings and Academic Affairs staff meetings, as his or her schedule allows. One Faculty Associate is expected to be identified for a Fall 2014 start date.

Full-time, tenured faculty members at UNCW are eligible to apply for this position.

Program Time Frame:

The Faculty Associate appointment is expected to be effective for the 2014-15 academic year.

Work Assignment Considerations:

A partial buyout of the Faculty Associate’s teaching load (1-2 courses, depending on the instructional flexibility of the individual’s home unit during the term(s) of appointment) and supplemental compensation for a summer appointment are envisioned.  The requested workload arrangements should be specified in the letter of application. The total FTE associated with program participation will not exceed 50% of the Faculty Associate’s overall workload assignment for the time period of the appointment.

Application Process:

Each applicant is asked to submit to the Provost’s Office by the priority consideration date of Tuesday, April 1 a current curriculum vitae and letter of application describing his or her interest in this position and proposed goals (including personal leadership development goals) he/she wishes to achieve through program participation.  In that the appointment to this position has implications for the Faculty Associate’s workload assignment, applicants will be required to discuss their proposed participation with the Department Chair or School Director and academic Dean and receive those individuals’ written endorsement of their applications.  That written endorsement should be appended to the application.

Questions regarding the application process or other aspects of the program are welcome and should be directed to Provost Denise Battles at battlesd@uncw.edu or (910) 962-3389 or Vice Provost Steve McFarland at mcfarlands@uncw.edu or (910) 962-3137.
