UNCW Names Lowell K. Davis Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

FRIDAY, MARCH 12, 2021

Dear Campus Community:

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Lowell K. Davis as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, effective May 17.

I have no doubt that Lowell will build on the legacy left by the former vice chancellor, the late Pat Leonard, and continue in the commitment that makes the division one of the most respected in the nation. Knowing that he has big shoes to fill, Lowell is humbled to follow in the footsteps of the beloved “VCPL,” and is eager to support and enhance the many ways we help students “create experiences for life.”

Lowell comes to UNCW from Western Carolina University, where he is the associate vice chancellor for student success. Prior to WCU, he held posts at the University of Alabama, Indiana University and Hampton University. Throughout his career, he has shown incredible skill in student affairs administration; collegiate leadership; and effectiveness in building and strengthening college cultures and community relationships. These strengths will guide him as he leads UNCW’s Division of Student Affairs.

He holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University in higher education administration and student affairs, a master’s in counseling and a bachelor’s in English arts-secondary education from Hampton University. He serves as the polemarch/president of the Asheville alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and on the board of advisors for the Baptist Children’s Home of North Carolina. From 2018-19, he completed an American Council on Education Fellowship at University of California, Davis. In 2018, he was honored with a Spirit of the Dreamer award from the “I Have A Dream” Foundation.

Lowell will report directly to me and work with the campus community, especially the professionals in student affairs, to provide leadership and wise counsel to best ensure a safe and engaging environment inclusive for all students. I trust he will be a watchful and supportive steward of the areas of housing and residence life; student extracurricular organizations; the Career Center; student physical and behavioral health; parent and family programs; transition programs, as well as the division’s $45 million budget and more than 1,000 staff and student employees.

Let’s thank the search firm, members of the search committee, co-chairs Liz Grimes, Nathan Grove and Jamie Winebrake, and those who stepped up to lead in interim capacities in many ways. I specifically want to call attention to the meaningful leadership that Dr. Brian Victor has provided as interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. He has shown remarkable compassion and courage while serving in that capacity, and we all owe him our appreciation for his service.

Sincerely,
