Math Placement Information

You are encouraged to view your degree audit to evaluate what math transfer credit you may have received from your former institution(s).

  • Students who are transferring math credit into UNCW will be allowed to register for math courses based upon the existing prerequisites which the transfer credit satisfies.
  • Students planning to transfer math credit, whose official transcripts have not processed, may be given overrides based on documentation provided during orientation advising.
  • Students who do not have the transfer credit needed to satisfy prerequisite courses are encouraged to complete the Math Readiness Program. This is a free, self-paced, online program which will review the student mastery of necessary concepts. Upon successful completion of the online program, you will be allowed to register for STT 210, 215 or MAT 111 as needed for your program.

Math Course Requirements

All incoming first-year and transfer students can take the UNCW Math Placement test; however, some students may be exempt. This page will provide information to help you decide if you should take the math placement test.

Your major determines which math courses you need to take to graduate with your degree. Below is a table to help you determine which level of math you need based on your major. math-placement-image-1.png

Note: MAT 101 does not require the math placement test.

Math Course Sequencing

Once you determine the highest level of math you need, follow the course sequencing below to reach the required math level for your major. Then, view your degree audit to evaluate what math transfer credit you may have received from your former institution(s). To learn more about the degree audit, click here.

Math Course Placement based on ACT & Calculus

Some students may be exempt from taking the math placement test. The charts below provide information on how ACT scores and AP scores can determine your math placement. If you plan to use ACT or AP scores for math placement, you must send your scores to UNCW.

Course Credit Earned based on AP Calculus Exam

The University of North Carolina Wilmington participates in the advanced placement programs of the Educational Testing Service (ETS) by awarding academic credit to students who achieve scores on those examinations determined to have a UNC Wilmington course equivalent. Below is a list of scores and the equivalent course credit you may receive. For more information, click here
