Prospera, Duchess of Milan, has been usurped of her throne, set adrift on the ocean with her daughter Miranda and left for dead. They survive the ordeal and arrive on an enchanted island, inhabited by elusive supernatural beings and an amphibian-like creature called Caliban. Some twelve years later, having become a sorceress and captor to the island’s creatures, Prospera spies a vessel in the distance and realizes the passengers are her enemies. Using her power and sorcery, Prospera conjures up a violent tempest, shipwrecking all on board and scattering them about the island. Prospera looks on as the marooned usurpers come to terms with their newfound isolation and as they contend with the enchanted island and its mysterious beings.
