Written by 18-year-old playwright Shelagh Delaney, A Taste of Honey is a slice-of-life classic that exposed postwar British audiences to the struggles of working-class women. Set around the docks of Salford Northern England in 1958, the play depicts an unmarried pregnant woman cohabiting with a gay man after an interracial affair. Delaney shows the vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in the face of massive deprivation and hopelessness. The play had a profound and long-lasting impact on British popular culture and blazed the trail for northern working-class “kitchen sink” drama.
