Coming Soon: New UNCW Phone System using VoIP Technology


ITS is pleased to announce that starting mid-May there will be a comprehensive replacement of the campus phone system, including new phones for offices, conference rooms, lobbies and classrooms (replacing the current intercoms). Every location that currently has a phone will get a new phone. Overall, more than 2800 phones will be replaced.

What's Different About the New Phone System?

This new system uses Voice-Over IP (VoIP) technology, which means that phones will work over an Ethernet connection instead of legacy phone lines and will provide you with numerous enhancements, including a built-in directory (no more searching for UNCW phone numbers) and self-service portals to administer your phone and voicemail settings. Of note, voicemail will still be delivered to your UNCW email, and you will retain your current phone number.

What is the Timeline?

ITS is already in a successful pilot phase of the implementation, and we will begin the campus-wide implementation, building by building, beginning mid-May and continuing through the months of June and July. All staff in your building/department will receive an email notification with more details several days before your new phone is installed. There will be a few steps to follow, such as setting up your voicemail message and PIN, which can be completed either on or off campus. While our vendor representatives will be handling the installations, ITS personnel will be present at all times, and we will be taking numerous precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. After the installation of your VoIP phone, we will leave your current/old phone in place for a short time. This is necessary to provide the campus phone provider with time to move your number over to the new phone.

After the implementation phase is complete, we will begin offering additional features and functionality in subsequent phases including Softphone capability, by request, which enables you to make calls from a computer or smart phone that appear to be “from” your UNCW number.
