Multi-Factor Authentication

The most important step you can take to protect your account and data!

April, 2020

All faculty, staff and students at UNCW now have the option to add Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to their accounts! Read more at, or visit to enroll now!

If you are watching the News (and who isn’t these days?) you probably have seen reports on cyber scams and phishing attacks taking advantage of anxieties related to the Coronavirus. These phishing emails often try to steal your username and password through a fake login page.

Recently, you may have received emails stating: “You have received a new document shared via OneDrive and awaiting your signature.” Also, you may have noticed terms like “brute-force attacks,” “credential stuffing” and “password spray attacks” in the News. All of these attacks aim at gaining unauthorized access to your accounts. That access can put your data and the university at risk.

Good news! As of right now, everyone on campus can take one simple step to add the most effective security measure to their accounts and protect themselves from someone taking over their accounts.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer to your login so that ITS can make sure that you, and only you, are logging into UNCW systems. And it is incredibly effective! In 2019, Microsoft stated that MFA can block 99.9 percent of account compromise attacks.

Enrolling in MFA is a positive step you can take, right now, to help protect yourself, the entire campus community, and our UNCW systems and services. Learn how to sign up at It only takes a few minutes to make a significant improvement in your security.
