Dr. Timothy M. Gill is an assistant professor of sociology in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at UNCW. He has published on topics involving U.S. foreign policy, Venezuelan politics and human rights, and sociological theory. His work has been published in several academic outlets, including Sociological ForumJournal of World-Systems ResearchSocial Currents, and Sociology of Development. He has also published his work in several public outlets, including the Washington PostThe Nation, Cleveland Plain DealerWorld Politics Review, and Contexts.

Dr. Gill completed his dissertation, The State and Civil Society in Socialist Venezuela: The Case of U.S. Democracy Assistance, Venezuelan National Sovereignty, and International Cooperation Law, at the University of Georgia in 2016. Thereafter, Dr. Gill was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research at Tulane University. In his dissertation, he focused on U.S. democracy assistance efforts in Venezuela under the government of former President Hugo Chávez, and the Venezuelan government’s attempts to prohibit these efforts. He is currently turning his dissertation into a book-length manuscript. Dr. Gill is also the editor of an edited volume titled The Future of U.S. Empire in the AmericasThe Trump Administration and Beyond (Routledge Press) due out in March 2020.

Dr. Gill has been an assistant professor of sociology at UNCW since Fall 2017. At UNCW, he teaches Introduction to Sociology (SOC105), Social Theory (SOC360/SOC503), Globalization and Development (SOC415), and Political Sociology (SOC495). He is also the founder of the UNCW Social Science Workshop.
