
Criminology Degree Requirements
A Major in Criminology for the B.A. degree:
The number of credits to be earned for a B.A. in Criminology is 42 hours.
Core requirements
CRM 105 - Introduction to Criminal Justice
CRM 255 - Criminology (SOC 255) or
CRM 256 - Criminology: Writing Intensive (SOC 256)
CRM 300 - Methods of Social Research (SOC 300)
CRM 301 - Sociological Data Analysis and Interpretation (SOC 301)
CRM 360 - Criminological Theory
SOC 105 - Introduction to Sociology
STT 215 - Introduction to Statistics or MATT 111 or higher
Option 1. Criminology
In addition to the core requirements, students choosing the Criminology option must also complete:
CRM 495-Senior Seminar or
CRM 499- Honors Work in Criminology
Choose a minimum of 6 hours from primary electives: CRM 310, 315, 370, 375, 376 (SOC 376), and 420
6 hours from secondary electives: CRM 110, 307, 320, 330, 350, 370, 380, 381, 385, 390, 395, 405, 410, 415, 425, 450, 460, and 490.
9 hours from social science electives: ANT 211; PSY 247, 275; SOC 215, 220, 260, 315, 325, 335, 340, 345, 350, 360, 365, 380, 433, 449.
Option 2. Criminal Justice
In addition to the core requirements, students choosing the Criminal Justice option must also complete:
CRM 495-Senior Seminar or
CRM 499- Honors Work in Criminology
Choose a minimum of 6 hours from primary electives: CRM 307, 320, 330, 380, 381, and 460.
6 hours from secondary electives: CRM 110, 310, 315, 350, 370, 375, 385, 390, 395, 405, 410, 415, 420, 425, 450, 455, and 490.
9 hours from social science electives: ANT 211; PSY 247, 275; SOC 215, 220, 260, 315, 325, 335, 340, 345, 350, 360, 365, 375, 380, 433, 449.
Option 3. Public Criminology
This option provides students with intensive training in using sociology/criminology to inform real life social issues. Students will engage in activities that seek to address social problems within the local community and disseminate these research findings beyond the academy. In addition to the required core courses, students must complete:
CRM 391- Public Sociology/Criminology Seminar (3 hours in fall)
CRM 496- Practicum in Public Sociology/Criminology (6 hours in spring)
Choose a minimum of 12 hours from electives: CRM 110, 307, 310, 315, 320, 330, 350, 370, 375, 380, 381, 385, 390, 405, 410, 415, 420 ,425, 450, 490.
3 hours from social science electives: ANT 211; PSY 247, 275; SOC 215, 220, 260, 315, 325, 335, 340, 345, 350, 360, 365, 375, 380, 433, 449.
A grade of "C" or better is required in CRM 105, and no more than one course with a grade of "D" may count toward the requirements for the major (or minor) in criminology. An overall grade point average of 2.0 or better is required among courses used to satisfy the major (and minor).
Oral Communication Competency Requirement
To satisfy the oral communication competency requirement for the B.A. degree in Criminology a student must successfully complete CRM 495 or COM 110.
Computer Requirement
To satisfy the computer competency requirement for the B.A. degree in Criminology a student must successfully complete CRM 301 (SOC 301).
Applied Learning Requirement
To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. degree in criminal justice a student must successfully complete one of the following: CRM 300 (SOC 300), 301 (SOC 301), 415, 490, CRML 490 or CRM 491.
