I come to UNCW fresh out of the University of South Florida, where I earned my doctorate in Sociology in August of 2020. In 2009 I had returned to school after a long and relatively productive career in marketing. My concentrations are Medical Sociology, and the Sociology of Education. My research is focused on improving the lived experience of individuals who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, including addressing the challenges experienced by family members and others in their social network. Whenever possible, I bring my personal story into my classrooms, and discuss with my students how the trajectory of my life has informed my decision to seek my PhD in Sociology, my research and writing, and my love of teaching. When I'm not working I am an avid cyclist and (in "normal" times) an active triathlete. My wife and I have two grown children. We are excited to be here, and are looking forward to experiencing all that UNCW, the city of Wilmington, and this beautiful state have to offer!
