Resource For Military Families

The Office of Military Affairs serves all military-affiliated students, including those who have served in the military and their families. You are considered military-affiliated whether you are using VA educational benefits, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, or not.

About a third of our total military-affiliated population is made up of military spouses. Many of our students fall into more than one category of military affiliation; for example, some of our students are both military spouses and military members or veterans.

For students in Onslow County and the Jacksonville area, the Office of Military Affairs has an office in the Base Education Center at New River Air Station, where you can connect with Camden Ege, our Military Liaison and Program Coordinator.

As a military-affiliated student at UNCW, you are always welcome to use the resources available in the Military Affairs Wing in Veterans Hall 1029 (think free snacks and coffee, a microwave and refrigerator, plus comfy places to spread out and do homework).

You'll also be part of the Military-affiliated Student Listserv, a weekly email newsletter that keeps you up-to-date on military community events, both on campus and off; scholarship opportunities, many of which are designated specifically for military spouses; internship and job listings; and UNCW support services.

Military spouses who are interested in online programs at UNCW may choose from undergraduate degrees that are totally online, as well as online master's degrees or graduate certificates and licensure programs.

At UNCW, the Office of Continuing and Professional Education helps students access My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) benefits, a program that helps military spouses pay for certifications, continuing professional education, and graduate certificates in a variety of fields.

If you are pursuing a graduate certificate with MyCAA, request that your academic advisor sign your Educational Training Plan (ETP) as the university official.

Onward2Opportunity cohorts at both Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, a program that helps military spouses gain access to professional training certificates, such as the Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate.

Camp Lejeune Leadership Seminar, offers a three-day seminar twice a year for military-connected spouses from Camp Lejeune, MCAS New River, MCAS Cherry Point, and MCAS Beaufort, SC.

Many students who attend UNCW use Veterans Affairs (VA) educational benefits to pay tuition and fees:

• Chapter 35 (Dependents' Educational Assistance)
• Fry scholarship (part of Chapter 33)

Students who are using the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs scholarship may contact our Third Party Billing office for assistance.

Students should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for fall/spring and an additional FAFSA for the summer term, if taking classes during the summer.

UNCW offers a military-affiliated student payment plan, which allows the bill to be divided into 3 payments over the course of the fall or spring semester.

Contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for assistance with understanding your student's bill.

Students on university campuses are required to have health insurance. Each semester, students must choose whether to enroll in the student health insurance plan or to waive the plan and provide proof of another form of health insurance. If they do not waive the plan, the fee will be added as a charge on their eBill.

Complete Health Insurance enrollment/waiver process

Students may opt to have more than one kind of health insurance.

For access to Tricare proof of health coverage, visit milConnect.

For proof of enrollment for insurance purposes, email the Registrar's Office to request a letter of enrollment verification.

The North Carolina Residency Determination Service (NC RDS) decides whether a student is considered in-state (resident) or out-of-state (non-resident).

Access residency requirements and complete the NC RDS process. Ensure that your student logs back in to the RDS system to submit additional paperwork as required.

If your student's determination is out-of-state and you believe this to be in error, contact RDS for guidance on submitting a reconsideration or appeal.

Qualify for Veteran's Choice Act and Yellow Ribbon Program

If you need a letter verifying your student's enrollment at UNCW (for example, in order to update their military ID card, to update DEERS, or for insurance purposes), please email Registrar to request an enrollment verification letter.
