Financial Resources

While the out-of-state tuition at UNCW is lower than many comparable institutions, UNCW and the Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS) offer a variety of scholarships and additional financial support resources for international students.

Students who are seeking additional funding to attend UNCW are encouraged to explore the financial support resources listed below.

Scholarships for International Students

Amount

$2,000 - $5000 per academic year

Terms

This scholarship is a renewable award for undergraduate students needing F-1 visa sponsorship (excluding TABSA and Marmara) who have demonstrated elite academic ability and has excelled in high school and demonstrated continued interest in UNCW. Consideration for this award is based on the student’s UNCW application; no additional action is required to be considered.

Amount

$2,000, split up to $1,000 each semester for one year (fall & spring semesters).

Terms

  • Only current international students on an F-1 visa are eligible to apply.
  • To be eligible students must be on track to be full-time current students for the upcoming academic year.
  • Students must commit to one academic year of involvement/interaction with OISS and international students.
  • Students who receive this award will serve as a Global Student Ambassador for the following academic year (fall & spring semester).
  • In order to maintain the scholarship throughout the year, ambassadors have to fulfill ALL of their responsibilities. Otherwise, the scholarship will be suspended.
  • Scholarship recipients must attend Ambassador Orientation before the spring semester ends.

  • Submit a one-page essay on how you feel you could support incoming international students
  • Submit 2 references
  • All documents should be sent to international@uncw.edu
  • Interviews will conducted in March

Graduate students may also be eligible for graduate, research, or teaching assistantships, tuition remission, and scholarships from their academic department. Students should contact their department's program coordinator once admitted to the university to inquire about the availability of financial support. These awards can vary in amount.

The University Scholarship Application is available to newly admitted and current UNCW students. The priority deadline to apply is March 1. You must log in using your UNCW credentials to apply.

Financial Resources for International Students

  • International students can use EducationUSA's Find Financial Aid tool and visit their local EducationUSA advising center for more information about the options available to them.
  • UNCW Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid: For general information about other UNCW scholarships.
  • UNCW Handshake Jobs Portal: Search for on-campus jobs.
    • Note: The Handshake portal also includes postings for off-campus jobs. Students must receive approval from OISS before beginning any off-campus employment.
    • F-1 students do not need any additional authorization to work on campus (paycheck must come from UNCW).
  • Students may also contact individual departments at UNCW, such as Campus Recreation or the library, to inquire about available jobs for student workers.

Paying Your Bill

All students must pay their tuition and fees by the first day of the semester. Failure to pay your bill in full will result in your courses being canceled. All payments are made to the Office of Student Accounts.

The most efficient means for a student using an international bank account to pay student fees is through Travelex's Bank to Bank Transfer. Please see the Student Accounts page for full details.

If you would like to pay your bill in installments rather than all at once, please review the Teal Pay Tuition Payment Plan information on the Student Accounts page and email the department with questions.

If you have any questions about your student account, your bill, or the payment plan, contact Student Accounts directly. OISS does not manage student accounts or billing.

Understanding Your Bill

Charges That Are Waived

Charges that are waived: If you are an exchange student or TABSA student, you will be granted a UNCW tuition waiver (similar to a voucher payment) for your tuition and tuition-related fees. The UNCW tuition waiver will usually be applied to your UNCW Student account by the first UNCW payment deadline (regular student payment deadline, not exchange student deadline).

Charges You Must Pay

If any of the following UNCW charges are on your student account, you will need to pay the charges in full.

  • On-Campus Housing
  • Meal Plan
  • On-Campus Mailbox ($11/semester)
  • International Student Health Insurance
  • Student ID Card ($20)

Review Your Student Account Periodically

Most UNCW Student account charges will be applied to your account by the beginning of the semester. However, it is important that you periodically review your student account to make sure your bill is paid in full.
