In 2016, the Office of Sustainability issued its first project award to help fund student research in microplastics. Since then, we have awarded $121,000 to support various sustainability research and projects across campus to students, faculty, and staff.
Each year during the Fall semester, funding and scholarship opportunities through our office are open for submissions. Applicants are judged by a panel comprised of faculty, staff, graduate, and undergraduate students, and awards are issued for use in the Spring.
Topics for these opportunities are not restricted to environmental issues. Our office focuses on the intersection of people, planet, and prosperity. Any projects that support those values are considered for funding or scholarship.
The Office of Sustainability allocates $10,000 per year to provide supplemental funding to students, faculty, and staff in pursuit of sustainability projects or research that will further the mission of sustainability at UNCW. Projects can be in any discipline, as long as they promote the pillars of sustainability: economic vitality, social equity, and environmental stewardship. There is no set award amount. Historically, awards have ranged from $200 to $5,000. The award cycle begins in the Fall semester for projects occurring the following Spring and/or Summer.
