Oceanography Merit Badge

Join MarineQuest to complete your Oceanography Merit Badge!  This hands-on science program provides  Scouts the opportunity to explore the fields of marine science through lab-based activities, discover all the life in a single drop of water, and value our coastal resources.  Participants will complete all Badge requirements (except #8) at the UNCW Center for Marine Science in one day.  

• Saturday, October 12, 2024 - 8:45am - 4:30pm
• 6th - 12th grade students 
• Cost - $50 (lunch is NOT included)
• Location UNCW Center for Marine Science 
• Prerequisite - Must know square and bowline knots before attending

MarineQuest does not provide badges. A certificate of completed requirements will be provided. Scouts should provide the completed certificate to a Scout Master who can issue individual badges.

Highlights

• Explore marine science careers
• Investigate wave dynamics and currents
• Examine properties of seawater
• Engineer a phytoplankton net
• Sample abiotic and biotic features of the coast
• Identify plankton under the microscope
• Use scientific tools and technologies of oceanographers  

Exploration Merit Badge - FULL

Participants will learn how to prepare and execute a kayak excursion. We will start in the lab and end in the field kayaking to Masonboro Island.  At Masonboro we will execute a group-decided mission and end the day back at the lab with clean-up and conclusions.

• Learn the basics of field trip prep in a coastal zone including reading tide charts, weather forecasts, and maps.
• Plan a scientific research expedition. 
• Kayak to an undeveloped barrier island.  
• Use tools and technologies of coastal scientists.

Eco badge requirements 

Register at GS Coastal Pines

Join MairneQuest and become a field agent exploring the salt marsh and intertidal outcrops of coastal Wilmington.  Engage in hands-on lab experiments at the UNCW Center for Marine Science.  Girl Scouts will complete the requirements for age-specific Eco badges.

Parents/troop leaders must find an alternate plan during the lab session of the program. 

MarineQuest does not provide patches. A certificate of completed requirements will be provided. Girl Scouts should provide the completed certificate to a troop leader who can then issue individual patches.
