Course 1: Healthcare Systems & Economics

Starts: April 1st on Canvas | In-Person: June 14th – 15th

The Introduction to Health Economics for Physicians Course will focus on:

  • Introducing the participants to the history and evolution of healthcare delivery and financing.
  • The Role the macroeconomy plays in shaping healthcare decisions.
  • Variation in healthcare spending and costs across states.
  • The evolution and consequences of the changes to the payment environment.
  • Methods that economist rely on to evaluate healthcare policy shocks.

This program provides the opportunity to learn the current state of the healthcare market, what changes are being implemented from a policy perspective, and what role they will play in shaping the healthcare landscape. You will learn how to:

  • Interpret the changes occurring in the healthcare space.
  • Find and use data dealing with multiple dimensions of healthcare costs and quality.
  • Evaluate the consequences of policy shocks at the national and regional levels.

Additional Course Information

This course is applicable to physicians practicing in both inpatient or outpatient settings who are seeking the knowledge and skills they can apply to their medical practices and personal lives.

Participants must have reliable internet access and availability to attend in-person residency on UNCW campus to complete this program.

All potential participants must complete the application process in order to enroll in this program. 

For the application process you will need

  • Valid participant contact information (name, email, phone number)
  • Supervisor approval and contact information 
  • A statement of interest that is 300 words or less

Dr. Mouhcine Guettabi Professor of Economics at the Cameron School of Business

Dr. Guettabi joins UNCW from the University of Alaska Anchorage where he was an associate professor of economics. He is an applied microeconomist with two main streams of research: the effect of natural resources on households and communities, and the socioeconomic effects of unconditional cash transfers.

Dr. Ethan Watson Professor of Finance at the Cameron School of Business

Dr. Watson is an Assistant Professor of Finance in the Economics and Finance department, joining the Cameron School of Business faculty in 2013. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Watson spent 5 years in financial roles in the Healthcare industry, working for the Medical College of Georgia and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. While at these hospitals, Dr. Watson managed the capital budget, was involved in revenue cycle projects, and participated in negotiating insurance payer contracts.

Dr. Stephen Horan Professor of Finance at the Cameron School of Business

Dr. Horan is an Associate Professor of Finance at UNCW. Prior to joining the faculty, he was a Managing Director at CFA Institute, where he led the Credentialing Division and the Professional Learning Division. Dr. Horan currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Wealth Management and the Journal of Impact and ESG.

Dr. Yolanda Pollard Director of the UNCW Swain Center

Before joining UNCW, Dr. Pollard held various industry leadership roles, most recently with GE Vernova, the portfolio of GE’s global power businesses, and with Entergy Corporation, a Fortune 500 utility company where she provided strategic counsel for more than 25 years. Prior to that, she led the customized corporate training function for the University of New Orleans. She holds a doctoral degree in executive leadership from the University of Holy Cross.

All participants must complete all 10 online modules prior to attending the in-person residencies. In-person residencies are mandatory for all participants. 

Participants must complete all coursework and attend in-person residency to receive CME credits. Participants must complete all 4 courses to receive the Physician Executive Business Certificate.
